Mussaenda's Quiet Trick

Pink mussaenda flowers hang from twisting yellow-green peduncles around a single large leaf, the curve of stem doing most of the work of the composition.
Mussaenda is a small tropical shrub with a quiet trick. The 'flowers' you notice from a distance are actually enlarged sepals — bracts — that have evolved to look like petals in order to attract pollinators. The real flowers, the tiny tubular things at the centre, are almost an afterthought. The bracts hang on for weeks. The flowers are there for a day at most.
This branch had four or five of the bracts in different shades of pink, held up on yellow-green peduncles that curled in elegant arcs around a single broad leaf. I framed the shot so the curve of the strongest stem ran across the frame, the leaf sitting like a dark anchor at the centre, the bracts trailing off to either side. The light was warm and slightly hazy, the kind of garden light you only get in the hour before the rain. Some plants are exhausting to photograph because they refuse to compose themselves. Mussaenda is the opposite. It does almost all of the work for you, and then waits.
