Mother and Calf

Mother and Calf

Lake Nakuru, Kenya · nature

A white rhino and her calf graze a short distance apart on open grass, an acacia line on the horizon. Quiet bulk, quiet trust.

White rhinos are the most social of the rhinos — calves stay close to their mothers for two or three years, and small groups will sometimes graze together. The bond between mother and calf is visible in body language: they orient toward each other even when they're a few metres apart, the calf will mirror her movements, and if one lifts her head the other does too.

This pair was grazing across a piece of open ground, the calf slightly behind and to the side, both moving at the same slow pace. The horizon was made of acacia silhouettes and clouds, the grass already going to seed for the dry season. I shot from a vehicle that had stopped at a respectful distance and kept the engine off. They didn't look up. That, in itself, is the photograph — two animals who have decided we aren't worth their attention, and are right not to give it.
