A gulmohar tree in heavy bloom, the canopy almost entirely red against its own dark green fern-like leaves. The summer flower of urban India.
Gulmohar — Delonix regia, flame of the forest, royal poinciana — is the tree that turns Indian cities red every summer. It is also the tree that drops thousands of small spent petals onto every street it shades, so that by mid-June the pavements under a flowering gulmohar look as if there has been a small dignified massacre overnight. The tree is unmistakable: tall, broad-canopied, with finely-divided bipinnate leaves and orchid-shaped scarlet flowers that bloom for weeks.
I shot this one when it was at the very peak — almost no green left visible in the upper canopy, the red so dense it became texture more than colour. The dark stems wove through the bloom like underlines. There is no botanical reason a tree needs to be quite this generous, and gulmohar does not really care. Other trees flower at the edges of their canopies, or in modest clusters. Gulmohar flowers the way someone applauds at the end of a wedding: with the whole body, for as long as possible.
