Disc in Dust

The sun reduced to a small soft disc behind a wash of dust haze, a single tree silhouette holding the bottom of the frame. The world at its most simplified.

There are afternoons in central India when the sky becomes more atmosphere than air. Heat lifts the dust off the dry-season fields, the wind carries it sideways for hours, and by late afternoon the entire dome above you has gone a uniform pale brown. The sun, when you can find it, is no longer the sun — it has become a small soft disc that you can stare at without your eyes hurting, hanging in a layer of suspended earth.

I was driving when I saw this happening, and I asked the driver to stop. The tree at the bottom of the frame was unremarkable — some kind of plains acacia, low and broad — but it was the only thing the sun had picked out as worth holding onto. Everything above the canopy was haze; everything below was already going to shadow. I framed the picture almost to its limit, with most of it empty, and let the disc do all the work. There is a kind of Indian landscape that asks you to be okay with very little happening. This is one of those.
