A single cumulus thunderhead rises into the evening sky like a slow explosion, the hills below already dimming into haze. Weather as architecture.
A mature cumulus cloud at the end of a hot day is one of the closest things to architecture that the atmosphere produces. The thermals push the cloud upward in a single column, ten or fifteen thousand feet from base to anvil, with bulges and lobes that catch the late light and look almost sculpted. From the ground, it looks like a column of pure white pushing up into a deepening blue.
This one was building somewhere south of where I was standing, over a low ridge of hills that had already gone into shadow. The base was probably already raining on someone, but from here it was just shape and light. I shot it big, with the cloud filling most of the frame and only a thin band of ridge and tree at the bottom to give scale. Cumulus is one of the few subjects that gets bigger the longer you look at it. You don't have to do anything except wait, and trust the cloud to do what it's already doing.
