A photograph and a story, every morning

Steam rises in a shaft through the iron innards of an old engine room, a porthole throwing a single white circle of light. A working interior at its hottest.

There is a particular smell to old engine rooms that I have never managed to photograph — heated oil, coal dust, the metallic edge of steam. You see it instead in the surfaces. Every plate, every rivet, every welded seam has been blackened and reblackened by decades of soot, then wiped down once a shift and started again.

I was on a working vessel when I took this — the steam was being vented after a pressure check, and for a moment the whole interior was lit by the porthole and softened by the white column of vapour. The man at the bottom of the frame is doing something I couldn't quite see — adjusting a valve, threading a pipe. I cropped in tight and converted to black and white in the edit because colour added nothing to a scene that was already pure tonal contrast. This is the kind of work that keeps everything else moving, and most photography never bothers to look at it.
