Greetings, Acolytes of Adventure!
FURTHER ADVENTURES IN ROBOT SMOOCHING
First of all, a hearty greeting to my new subscribers! I'm attracting readers at a faster clip than I thought I would for this little experiment, which is keeping me warm through the cold days of winter...which actually isn't that cold right now...dammit, global warming.
At any rate, the aim is to really start churning out comics in the spring, possibly around May. I'll be launching both Dash Platypus and New Junk City properly around then, plus some other material.
In the meantime, here's something you can get right now! In 2016 I edited an indie comics anthology called Strange Romance, which produced 3 volumes plus a small bonus issue. The theme was love stories that also happened to be SF, fantasy, or horror--but the emphasis is on the romance.
The project was literally born out of me going "Hey, I sure know a lot of talented comics artists and writers, what if we collaborated on something?" With the aid of Charlotte Finn and Philip Rice, we put together 3 tight volumes (and a bonus issue) with no professional backing whatsoever. We even printed it in dead-tree format and took it to conventions...back when those were a thing. It was a lot of work for no real money, but I'm still pretty proud of what we accomplished with this, and I'm now making it available for digital download!
The first volume features 14 stories by various talented indie creators, over 150 pages, and now it's available online at itch.io and Gumroad for just $5.
The other two volumes will be following soon, and I'm also going to make this volume available for purchase at Globalcomix as soon as I can.

WHAT MAD UNIVERSE?!? CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND ELEVEN: IN COLD BLOOD!
A new installment of my podcast What Mad Universe?!? is now available for everyone--yes, everyone, even you, TODD.
Philip dug up a pretty obscure 1907 French pulp novel in the Jules Verne style, about an inventor and a minor aristocrat building an airship and flying it to the north pole. There they find a bizarre land untouched by humanity, and home to a strange, dinosaurian yet humanoid race. Seems like a pretty standard old-school Sci-fi premise, right? Well, it is--in fact, it's an almost Platonic example of the genre, to the point where it almost feels like a modern "steampunk" pastiche rather than an actual novel from before WWI, but we promise you it is. On top of that, it's intriguingly self-aware and forward-thinking for its time, casting a surprisingly harsh light on the colonialist aspects of this kind of "exploration" fiction, and with a genuine empathy for the "monstrous" dino-men, despite their alien nature.
It's called THE PEOPLE OF THE POLE, and we had great fun discussing it. Click below to listen!

And since I never miss a plug, I'll remind everyone that subscribing to my Patreon means you get to listen to every episode before it goes public. Plus it's often an extended version with interesting sidebars that we had to cut from the main episode for time, but it was like dismembering our children. And I should know! Wait, forget I said anything.

On top of my other plans, I've got something else brewing at the moment. I can't really say anything about it until it starts to come together more fully, but it's an actual Business Venture and I'm hoping it can be used to help comic creators in promoting their work and making a decent living as independents. As I've already mentioned a few times, the comics community and the whole media sphere in general is hitting extremely choppy waters as late capitalism does its thing, and I'm hoping I might be in a position to help carve out a little space for people to focus on creating stuff and making at least a modest living at it. Comics has been a tough medium to make a buck at at the best of times, wouldn't it be something if we could lend it a little stability?
Hopefully more on this to come, but in the meantime, if you're a creative type at all (or really, even if you're passionate about comics but have never made one yourself) I encourage you to join the Cartoonist Co-op. This is a burgeoning community of creators who are banding together to promote each other's work, collaborate, network and make connections, help each other out, share (and create) resources, and just generally provide a community for comics folks. They do online educational forums and drawing nights, write articles, and launch promotional campaigns for major releases by members. I'm personally in charge of the public newsletter, which we use to advertise member's work among other things. It'd be great to have you!
