MIKE LEW '86 - Aloha
Memorial for Loyola's Mike Lew '86 on Sunday on campus - Aloha attire encouraged
A memorial liturgy for beloved Loyola teacher and coach Mike Lew '86, who passed away on April 14, will be held on campus this Sunday, May 6 at 11:00 a.m. Mike excelled in the classroom as a student at The High and played football with renowned distinction for the Cubs as a starting nose guard.
After earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering and a brief stint with an engineering firm, Mike returned to his alma mater to teach science, which he did with great enthusiasm and commitment. Mike also served for many years as a revered assistant football coach on the lower levels and as a varsity track assistant coach. A long time defensive coordinator, Coach Lew motivated and inspired not only his players but his assistant coaches as well. His defensive platoons competed with uncommon aggressiveness and unparalleled success. Suffice to say, Mike will always be an important part of the indelible fabric of Cub Football. Many of Coach Lew's former players will be traveling to Sunday's liturgy from as far away as Chicago to celebrate his life.
Mike, who always had a broad, genuine smile for everyone he greeted, often wore Hawaiian shirts. Indeed, he possessed the true Aloha spirit. While the Polynesian word is used in island culture to say hello and goodbye, the word's broader meaning includes love, affection, sympathy, kindness, compassion and mercy. The "A" (AO) stands for Light. The "L"(LOKAHI) means Oneness Among Us. The "O" signifies "Truth". The "H" (HA'A HA'A) indicates humility. The final "A" (Aloha) symbolizes Absolute, True Love. Mike embodied and imparted all of those things. So please bring your Aloha spirit and attire on Sunday to bid Aloha to a man who brought immeasurable contributions and spirit to the Loyola community.
