Loyola athletics/Cub Football - Four former Cubs mentioned in Los Angeles Times articles today

Former Loyola athletes Anthony Barr '10, Thomas Welsh '14, Christian Rector '15, and George Paton '87 spotlighted in Los Angeles Times articles today
Los Angeles Times NFL reporter Sam Farmer wrote a feature today, which highlights the success of 6-5, 255 lb. All-Pro Minnesota Vikings outside linebacker ANTHONY BARR '10, who starred at Loyola as a running back before becoming a consensus All-American linebacker at UCLA and the recipient of the Lott IMPACT Trophy his senior year. The Lott Trophy is awarded annually to the nation's top defensive player. Barr was the ninth player taken in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Also mentioned in the same article was the Vikings' assistant general manager, GEORGE PATON '87, who starred both at quarterback and safety for the Cubs in 1986, earning All-Del Rey League honors. Paton continued his football career at UCLA where he was a co-recipient of the Bruin Award after his senior season in Westwood along with former Loyola teammate JOHN WINNEK '87. Before embarking on a career in the NFL Paton coached the Cub sophomore team to a 10-0 record in 1996.

In the article on UCLA's basketball team in the Times today, former Cub All-American THOMAS WELSH '14 was mentioned as a key member of the Bruins' 2017-2018 squad. The NBA-bound, 7-0 center has developed a deadly three-point shot.

Also mentioned in today's Times Sports section was All-Mission League defensive end CHRISTIAN RECTOR '15, Loyola's 2014 defensive MVP, who is expected to return to action at USC's Predator linebacker position in Saturday's game against Colorado after breaking his hand two weeks ago. Rector is second in the Pac-12 in sacks this season, despite missing two games.

Myles Bryant '16 featured in Sports Illustrated article
Loyola's 2015 Defensive Most Valuable Player MYLES BRYANT '16 continues to get rave reviews, this time in a feature article published in Sports Illustrated on November 9. The sophomore University of Washington defensive back is the second leading tackler for the Huskies with 40 stops, including four tackles for loss. Bryant has broken up six passes and has a pick six to his credit. Washington plays at Stanford tonight. See the article in the link below.
