Loyola athletics - Volleyball set to play for second consecutive CIF Southern section Division I crown

Loyola's volleyball program to play for second consecutive CIF Division I title on Saturday
Loyola's defending CIF Southern Section Division I championship volleyball squad will play Corona del Mar for the CIF title for the second consecutive year on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

On Wednesday evening at Leavey Gymnasium the top seeded Mission League champion Cubs (28-1) swept number four seed Newport Harbor (28-4) in three sets, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18, to set up the showdown for the crown against the Sea Kings.

On the other side of the bracket, number three seed Corona del Mar made short work of second seeded Oak Park, 25-20, 25-20, 25-11, to set up a reprise of last season's epic championship battle won by Loyola.  The Sea Kings (30-3) are looking not only to turn the tables from last spring, but also to avenge a loss to the Cubs in a non-league match at Leavey on April 26 that went five grueling sets before Loyola pulled out the victory.

The Cubs and Sea Kings are Goliaths in prep volleyball, the two schools having combined for 31 title game appearances in their storied histories.

Suffice to say, there will not be an empty seat in the house at Cerritos College on Saturday night as thousands of fired up fans will be flocking to witness what promises to be a finals match for the ages.  Loyola head coach MICHAEL BOEHLE '84 will be seeking his seventh CIF Division I championship for the Cubs.  Cerritos College is located at 11100 Alondra Boulevard, Norwalk, California 90650.
