Loyola athletics - Volleyball semifinals tonight at Leavey - Golf championship skein ties track & field's streak from '08-'13
Loyola hosts Newport Harbor in CIF Southern section Division I volleyball semifinals tonight
Loyola's Mission League champion volleyball team (26-1), the top seed in the CIF Southern Section Division I volleyball playoffs, will host number four seed Newport Harbor (28-3) tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Leavey Gymnasium in a semifinal match that will send the victor to Saturday night's finals.
The Cubs are gunning for a trip to the title match for the second consecutive year. Loyola won the Division I crown last Spring and the Cubs are hoping to repeat. It should be a sold out house for what promises to be a 'rock-the-rafters' battle tonight between defending section champion Loyola and the Sailors.
Cub golf team skein ties track and field record
Loyola head track & field head coach MICHAEL PORTERFIELD was the steward of six consecutive CIF Southern Section Division II track & field championships from 2008 through 2013, a remarkable victory skein in the annals of Cub athletics. Loyola's golf team won its sixth consecutive CIF Southern Section Central Division title on Monday to tie the record set by the track program.
Quest for the CIF Commissioner's Cup
This school year Cub athletic teams have already won two section championships (golf and lacrosse (because lacrosse is not yet a CIF-sanctioned sport, its title does not count in the Commissioner's Cup tabulations)) and were a close second in a third (swim and dive). Loyola reached the CIF 1A semifinals in basketball, and the Cub water polo squad also advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division I semifinals. The cross country team finished fourth in the CIF finals. Loyola currently has 13 points officially in the race for the CIF Commissioner's Cup. Volleyball already earned t actually secured 15 points in the athletic program's quest to win another Cup.
