Loyola athletics - Spring sports in full bloom - Soccer to play in CIF SoCal State Regionals on Tuesday night

Cub soccer loses heart breaker to Santa Barbara in Southern Section playoffs, but makes CIF State SoCal Regional field of top teams in Southern California
Loyola's Mission League champion soccer team (22-3-6, 11-0-1) lost a heart breaker, 1-0, to section title winner Santa Barbara in overtime in the CIF Southern Section Division I semifinals last Tuesday, but the Cubs have a shot at the CIF State Southern California Regional championship as they were invited to the eight-team tournament that gets underway on Tuesday. Sixth seed Loyola will travel to Woodland Hills for its opening match to take on the Conquistadors of El Camino Real (24-2-2), who won the CIF Los Angeles City Section Division I crown.  The match will get underway at 6:00 on the Conquistadors' home pitch (5440 Valley Circle Boulevard,Woodland Hills, CA 91367).

Loyola swimming and diving team looks strong as usual
Loyola annually fields among the best aquatics teams in the nation, and based on early results it looks like the Cubs will once again be in the CIF Southern Section Division I title hunt. Loyola dominated Chaminade at all levels in its first Mission League meet. The varsity swamped the Eagles 134-23.

Defending National Champion Cub volleyball squad defeats Notre Dame in Mission league opener
Loyola's defending National Champion volleyball squad opened Mission League play in a match against Notre Dame with a 3-1 win, 25-13, 25-17, 21-25, 25-13. A young Cub squad will host Westlake of Westlake Village at Leavey Gymnasium on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.

Two-time defending Southern California Region champion Loyola LAX squad drops close one to number one-ranked team in West
A large number of of starters from Loyola's two-time U.S. Lacrosse Southern California Regional champion lacrosse squad are now playing at the collegiate level, so extensive experience throughout the lineup is lacking, but the talent is not. The Cubs traveled to San Francisco last Thursday to play the number one-ranked team in the West, brother Jesuit school St. Ignatius. Last season Loyola was outscored by the Wildcats by seven goals, but this time out, the Cubs were in it all the way before they fell, 8-7. It is reasonable to expect Loyola to grow and improve as the season progresses. The Cubs defeated Great Oak of Temecula, 11-7, on Saturday and routed Los Alamitos, 15-5, last Tuesday. Ranked number one in the region entering the 2018 campaign, Loyola fell to perennial LAX powerhouse, Santa Ana Foothill, 12-11, in overtime in its opener on February 24. The Cubs will take on Thousand Oaks in a road match at the Lancers' home pitch on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

Loyola's six-time defending CIF Southern Section Central Division champion golf team is loaded again
The Cubs links squad has won six consecutive CIF Southern Section Central Division championships. Based on early results, the Cub golfers look to be in excellent shape to make a run at yet another title. Loyola placed second in the Servite Invitational on February 26 and defeated St. Francis at Brookside in Pasadena,191-211, last Wednesday before falling by a point, 202-203, to Mira Costa at Rancho Park on the first day of March. The Cubs commence play in the Oakmont Invitational today at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale today.

Cub tennis starts strong
Loyola's varsity tennis team has come out swinging with a 3-0 start, posting victories over St. Francis (12-6), Beverly Hills (10-8) and Brentwood (10-8).

Loyola track & field  sweeps Chaminade in Mission League opener
Loyola dominated Chaminade at all levels in its Mission League opening track & field meet on March 1. The perennial league champion Cubs host Alemany on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. Loyola's varsity outscored the Eagles, 86-36, the JVs ran away from Chaminade,109-11, and the Cub frosh-soph team triumphed by a 97-21 score.

Cub baseball shows promise in opener
In its first game of the season in the Bonita tournament on February 24, Loyola' s varsity baseball team in a great comeback effort scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the score against Charter Oak at home. The Cubs scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to post a 6-5 victory. Rain caused the rescheduling of some games last week. Loyola travels to Walnut for a 3:15 p.m. tilt against Walnut on Tuesday and hosts Crescenta Valley on Wednesday at Mark P. Robinson Diamond at 3:15 p.m..
