Loyola athletics - Playoffs on the horizon for spring sports, basketball commit Kyle Reece signs with George Fox

Cub track team runs well at Mt. SAC Invitational, Mission League title on line today against H-W 
On April 14th and 15th Loyola's track and field team participated in the Mt. SAC Invitational, which this year was held at El Camino College in Torrance because the track stadium at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut is undergoing renovations.

Senior ELIJAH HODGE placed fourth in the 400m Invitational with a time of 49.29.  The Cub 4 X 400m relay team placed third in the Invitational relay with a 3:20.91 clocking, and Loyola's 4 X 800m relay team finished in first place in the Seeded event with a time of 8:04.66.

Today at Loyola, the undefeated Cubs host Harvard-Westlake in their final regular season dual meet. The Wolverines are also unbeaten in Mission League competition.  The highly anticipated meet could come down to the final event, the 4 X 400 relay.  The winner will be crowned Mission League champion.  

A huge crowd is expected this afternoon.  The first race is at 3:15 p.m.


Loyola's Mission League champion swim team eyes defense of CIF Div. I title
Loyola's defending CIF Southern Section Division I champion swim and dive team is eyeing defense of its crown. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Mission League champion Cubs will participate in the Mission league prelims and finals at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Club at 11:30 a.m. on both days.  The competition this week is important in qualifying swimmers and divers for the CIF prelims.


Loyola LAX has showdown game against Harvard-Westlake on Tuesday
The US Lacrosse Los Angeles Region playoffs get underway next week.  The third-ranked Cubs (14-4 overall, 8-1 in Mission League) are a virtual lock to make the playoff field, but they have some unfinished business on Tuesday as they host archrival Harvard-Westlake in their final regular season match at Smith Field on senior Day.  The number one-ranked Wolverines upset then top-ranked Loyola, 13-12, in overtime on March 25 in Studio City in the schools' first Mission League fray of the 2017 campaign.

During Easter break the Cubs downed Poway, 7-2, and highly regarded Cathedral Catholic of San Diego, 10-6, on a road trip to San Diego County. On Saturday, Loyola hosted Orange County's number two-ranked team, San Clements, and recorded an impressive 11-7 victory over the Tritons.

Tuesday's match against Harvard-Westlake is certain to be a heart stopper.  The initial face-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.  An overflow crowd is expected for the blockbuster contest that will have major implications not only for bragging rights, but also playoff seeding.


Loyola volleyball hosts monster match against number three-ranked Corona del Mar on Wednesday
Loyola's defending CIF Southern Section Division I champion volleyball squad plays Alemany on Tuesday in Mission Hills, and hosts third-ranked Corona del Mar at Leavey Gymnasium on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.  It will be a mosnster match for the second-ranked Cubs with playoff level intensity in the air.  The Cubs defeated the Sea Kings in last season's CIF Div. I championship match.  Loyola is 19-1 and a perfect 9-0 in conference play. The first round of the CIF Southern Section Division i playoffs is slated for May 9.

Loyola has not lost a single set in Mission League competition.

Loyola golf enjoys Easter break on Monterey Peninsula
Loyola's five-time defending CIF Southern Section Central Division champion golf team (13-1) played at several of the world's most famous golf courses over the Easter break on the Monterey Peninsula.  Last Tuesday the Cubs defeated Carmel, 196-201, at Quail Lodge.  On Wednesday, Loyola suffered its first setback of the season, 202-188, to Robert Louis Stevenson School at Spyglass Hill, the winners' home course. The Cubs were the low scorers, 196-251, in a match Thursday against Monterey played at Del Monte Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

Loyola's final regular season match is this Thursday at Rancho Park Golf Course against Harvard-Westlake. Mission League Tournament No. 3 is scheduled for Tuesday, May 2, at Lakeside Country Club in Toluca Lake.

Loyola basketball standout Kyle Reece commits to George Fox University
Standout Loyola senior basketbaII forward KYLE REECE has committed to play basketball at George Fox University in Oregon.  The Bruins' program competes in Division III of the NCAA and is a member of the Northwest Conference.  Reece was a key player in the Cubs' 19-10 campaign that saw Loyola advance to the CIF Div. 1A semifinal round.

Cub baseball tries to get on track
Loyola's varsity baseball season has been disappointing up to this point, but beginning Tuesday the Cubs have a chance to get on track as they host the number two ranked team in the Southland, Harvard-Westlake, in the first contest of a three game series.  Loyola has nine league contests remaining,
