LOYOLA ATHLETICS - Loyola to host Mira Costa on Saturday in volleyball State Regional finals
IT’S WINNER TAKE ALL IN VOLLEYBALL STATE REGIONAL FINALS ON SATURDAY AS LOYOLA HOSTS ARCH RIVAL MIRA COSTA IN A MATCH THAT WILL DETERMINE THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
After defeating Mira Costa last Saturday in three sets (25-21, 25-22, 25-21) before a raucous capacity crowd at Cerritos College to win its 13th CIF title, the Cubs will host the Mustangs for the third time this season on Saturday, May 18, at Leavey Gymnasium at 6:00 p.m., and the stakes could not be any higher.
Loyola (31-1-1) made quick work of Edison on Tuesday in the first round of the CIF State Southern Regionals with a three game sweep of the Chargers (25-22, 25-8, 25-19). Last night, the Cubs did the same in sweeping the Corona del Mar Sea Kings (25-22, 25-16, 25-18) in the semifinals.
Meanwhile Mira Costa (37-4) swept San Diego Cathedral Catholic (25-23, 25-14, 25-18) on Tuesday and took down San Diego Torrey Pines in three sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-18) last night in Manhattan Beach.
The stage is set for another monster match between the arch rivals tomorrow. And this time the squad who wins the match will likely be crowned National Champion. Loyola is currently ranked number one in the American Volleyball Coaches Association/USA Today National Top 25 poll, and Mira Costa is ranked third behind Marist of Chicago.
Tickets for the showdown will go fast, so get them while they are available at GoFan.co.
In this season’s first meeting between the arch rivals in a non-league match in Manhattan Beach on May 11, the Cubs lassoed the Mustangs in three sets (25-21, 25-22, 25-21).
Mira Costa is hoping three’s a charm, but Loyola has its eyes firmly on the prize. Led by outside hitter, UCLA-bound All-American, outside hitter SEAN KELLY and his exceptional teammates, under the direction of head coach MICHAEL BOEHLE ‘84, who is gunning for his fourth national title at the helm, the talented Cubs will need to put forth another sterling effort to bring home the Natty.
Tomorrow will be the final chance to watch one of Loyola’s all-time best athletic squads.
