Loyola athletics - Lacrosse wins league, number one seed in playoffs - Cub swim team wins Mission League - volleyball wins conference title
Loyola lacrosse team wins league playoffs with dominant victory against Harvard-Westlake
One reporter described the Cubs' lacrosse victory over Harvard-Westlake in the championship match of the Mission League's first ever four-team playoff as "absolutely dominant". Indeed Loyola's 14-2 blasting of its arch rival on Friday was a statement-maker of the highest proportion.
With the exclamation mark-caliber win in the final match of the regular season, the playoff selection committee's choice to seed the Cubs number one in the sixteen-team Greater Los Angeles regional playoffs was an easy one. Loyola (16-4), which was undefeated in Mission League play, will host the Santa Monica Vikings on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on the pitch at Bob Smith Field.
As the Cubs are the number one seed, they will maintain home field advantage in each successive playoff round until the Greater Los Angeles championship match which will be played at Glendale High School on May 9 at 7:00 p.m. It appears Loyola is peaking at just the right time. The Cubs are the two-time defending Greater Los Angeles region and Los Angeles-Orange County champions.
If Loyola gets by Santa Monica in the first round Tuesday, it will take on the winner of the match between San Marcos of Santa Barbara (13-2) and Westlake (13-5) on Thursday at Smith Field. The semifinals are slated for Saturday where the Cubs could meet number four seed Chaminade (10-4), a Mission League foe they defeated 9-4 on April 17. If Loyola makes it to the regional championship match they will likely meet long time rival Palos Verdes (16-3), a team it defeated, 8-7, in a drama-filled overtime non-league match played on March 10.
Cub swim & dive team crushes the field in Mission League finals
After completing a dominant undefeated run through the Mission League in dual meet competition, Loyola's swim & dive team amassed 733 points to second-place finisher Crespi's 565 in the Mission League finals at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center last Tuesday.
The CIF Southern Section Division I prelims are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on May 10 at Riverside City College, and the finals are slated for May 12 at 5:00 p.m. at the same venue.

Loyola volleyball defeats Alemany in three sets, plays crucial match Thursday on road against Corona del Mar
The Cubs' defending National Champion volleyball squad (18-1, 11-0) was pressed to the limit by Alemany in Mission Hills on March 15 in a match that went five grueling sets, with Loyola pulling out a dramatic 20-18 fifth set triumph that had Cub partisans biting their nails down to the wire. It was the first time a league foe had taken a match to five sets against the Cubs in more than a decade.
Last Tuesday at Leavey Gymnasium in the rematch, Loyola made short work of the Warriors, who are ranked seventh in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches' poll. There was little drama this time around as the Cubs won in three sets, 25-18, 25-16, 26-24, to secure no worse than a tie for the conference crown. On Thursday, Loyola defeated St. Francis with ease in a Mission League road match, 25-9, 25-18, 25-22.
The Cubs, ranked third in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches poll, host Chaminade tonight at 6:00 p.m.in the Mission League finale and end the regular season in Newport Beach in a crucial match against perennial power Corona del Mar on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. That match against the fourth-ranked Sea Kings poses a must-win challenge for Loyola, as it will be looking to secure the third seed in the CIF Division I playoffs which commence with wildcard contests on May 5 and first round matches on May 8.
