Loyola athletics - Huge day for multiple Cub sports

Loyola LAX team crushes Harvard-Westlake to earn share of league title
Loyola's varsity lacrosse team, the defending US Lacrosse Southern Section champion, drubbed Harvard-Westlake, 13-6, before an overflow crowd at Smith Field on Tuesday afternoon, handing the number one-ranked Wolverines (16-1) their first loss of the season.  The dominating victory allowed the Cubs (15-4) to tie Harvard-Westlake for the Mission League title.  Loyola had been upset by the Wolverines, 13-12 in overtime, on March 25 when the Cubs were missing three starters because of injury.  The victory all but assures Loyola of the number two seed in the upcoming US Lacrosse Los Angeles Region playoffs.

In playoff competition the Cubs hope to avenge a 6-2 non-league loss to archrival Palos Verdes, who is expected to be awarded the number one seed.

Cub swimmers and divers dominate in Mission League finals
Loyola's defending CIF Southern Section Division I champion swim & dive team dominated in the Mission League finals on Tuesday at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Club in Pasadena, qualifying multiple Cub swimmers for the upcoming CIF prelims.  Loyola is hoping to repeat as the Division I team champion.

Loyola baseball defeats state number four-ranked Harvard-Westlake
Loyola's varsity baseball club stunned Harvard-Westlake, the number four-ranked team in California and the Southland's number two-ranked squad according to the Los Angeles Times, on Tuesday at Robinson Diamond, pulling out a resounding 5-2 come-from-behind victory.

Cub junior pitcher DIEGO AVILA pitched 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing the Wolverines just two runs, while fanning five Wolverine batters.  Senior Columbia-bound hurler TIMMY POST got the save.  Senior Rhode Island-bound slugger JOE FORTIN had a two run double and freshman outfielder KEVIN PARADA blasted his first career home run.  Senior outfielder JUSTIN MORRIS collected three hits and senior outfielder/first baseman JAKE MALLOY had two quality at-bats.

Down 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Loyola exploded for four runs which held up in the huge win.  The Cubs play Harvard-Westlake today at 3:30 p.m. at O'Malley Family Field in Encino in the second contest of the three game series against the Wolverines.

Cub volleyball sweeps Alemany with ease in preparation for tonight's monster match against Corona del Mar
Loyola's varsity volleyball squad recorded its 20th win of the 2017 campaign on Tuesday night in Mission Hills, sweeping Alemany, 25-17, 25-14, 25-22.

It will be hard to find a seat tonight in Leavey Gymnasium as the the number two-ranked Cubs take on number three-ranked Corona del Mar in a non-league match that will have huge seeding implications for the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.  Loyola defeated Corona del Mar last season in the CIF Div. I title game.

The first serve is at 6:00 p.m.  This will be the toughest non-league match of the year for the Cubs.  The winner will likely earn no worse than the number two seed in the playoffs, which get underway with wild card games on May 6.
