Loyola athletics - Cubs win unprecedented ninth CIF Southern Section Commissioner's Cup as top school in CIF
Loyola wins 2016-2017 CIF Commissioner's Cup, as most outstanding athletic program in section
The CIF Southern Section announced today that Loyola won an unprecedented ninth Southern Section Commissioner's Cup trophy, awarded annually to the school that amasses the most points in CIF Southern Section playoff competition. The Cubs won the Central Division championship in golf (5 points), were CIF Division I runners-up in swimming (3 points) and volleyball (3 points), were semifinalists in basketball (2 points) and water polo (2 points) and were fourth place finishers in cross country (1 point) to tally 16 points, one more than second place Oaks Christian.
The Cup was the second in a row for Loyola's outstanding athletics program. The Cubs won back-to-back Cups in 2002-2003 and 2003-2004, five consecutive trophies from 2008-2009 through 2012-2013 and last year's Cup.
No school in the sprawling Southern Section, which ranges geographically from Mammoth to the Imperial Valley, the Central Coast to the state's border with Arizona, and whose members number in excess of 570, has won even close to the nine Commissioner's Cups earned by Loyola.
