Loyola athletics - Cubs win L.A. Northern Division U.S. Lacrosse championship, score six unanswered goals to defeat Palos Verdes, 9-5
LOYOLA LACROSSE WINS THIRD CONSECUTIVE U.S. LACROSSE LOS ANGELES REGION TITLE
Showing amazing grit and determination, the top seeded Loyola varsity lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals after being down 5-3 late in the third quarter to defeat longtime archrival Palos Verdes in the U.S. Lacrosse Los Angeles (Northern Division) championship match before a huge crowd at Glendale High on Wednesday night.
The Sea Kings won the initial faceoff and scored first, but Cub junior attacker KAISER FRY fed cutting sophomore attackman ALEX HOROWITZ on the crease to pull the Cubs even, 1-1, with 9:50 remaining in the first quarter. Palos Verdes scored two consecutive goals before Fry's twin brother, midfielder SPEED FRY, ripped one into the net from 12 yards out to close the gap to 3-2 at the 5:01 mark of the second stanza.
With 55 seconds remaining in the half, senior midfielder HENRY HASSENBERG fed Kaiser Fry who buried it from ten yards to tie the contest at 3-3 going into the break.
Plagued by uncharacteristic turnovers in the first half, Loyola was unable to seize the momentum early in the third period as the Sea Kings scored on a broken play and tacked on another goal with 6:58 remaining in the quarter to make the score 5-3 in favor of PV. It was then that the Cubs flipped the switch in a big way, scoring six unanswered goals, allowing them to cruise to the title victory.
Loyola freshman midfielder OWEN GAFFNEY scored a goal from 12 yards out to draw the Cubs to within one at the 3:24 mark of the third period. Senior attacker WESTON PRIESTLEY powered a 12-yard scoring shot from the alley with 1:15 remaining in the third to knot the score at 5-5 heading into the final period.
Loyola owned the fourth quarter. At the 7:51 mark Gaffney curled to the front and buried his shot to put the Cubs ahead, 6-5. Kaiser Fry fed Hassenberg who hit the back of the net to up the lead to 7-5 with 6:46 remaining in the contest. At the 3:58 mark, Priestly attacked the middle and hit a beautiful bounce shot to put the Big Blue up, 8-5. Senior middie LIAM MILLER fed Hassenberg from the right wing, and Hassenberg's top shelf shot made the score 9-5 with 3:08 left in the match. It was a dominating fourth quarter performance by the three-time defending champs. Junior goalie WILL PARDUCCI turned in another brilliant performance at the net for the Cubs. Gaffney, Hassenberg and Priestly each scored two goals for the victors.
The impressive triumph sends Northern Division champion Loyola to the U.S. Lacrosse Southern California final at Newport Harbor High on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. where it will meet Orange County (Southern Division) title winner St. Margaret's of San Juan Capistrano which defeated Foothill of Santa Ana, 12-11, in a double overtime thriller at Irvine High School on Wednesday night to win the Southern Division crown.
Loyola (20-4) will be seeking to avenge an 8-4 non-league home loss at the hands of St. Margaret's (19-2) on St. Patrick's Day. The Tartans' head coach told the Orange County Register after his team's win last night that the St. Margaret's coaching staff would celebrate the title victory for an hour and then begin reviewing film. The Cubs are a much better team than they were on March 17, so film review of that match might not be too helpful. The fight for the Southern California U.S. Lacrosse title on Saturday promises to be epic.
Loyola will be seeking its third consecutive U.S. Lacrosse Southern California diadem. The Cubs dispatched Foothill in last season's Southern California championship match.
The Big Blue is hoping for a huge turnout of supporters on Saturday afternoon.
