Loyola athletics - Cub volleyball to play for national title, Masters Meet tonight, All-League LAX

Loyola volleyball to play for top spot in nation Saturday

Loyola's varsity volleyball squad sat atop the national rankings going into last Saturday's CIF Southern Section Division I championship match, but the Cubs dropped a spot in the MaxPreps rankings as a result of a three-set sweep at the hands of Corona dell Mar.  Now the Sea Kings are perched at the number one spot.

With Loyola's four-set win over a game Oak Park team and CdM's four-set victory over neighborhood rival Newport Harbor on Thursday night in the CIF State Southern California Regional playoffs, the stage is set for a battle to determine who is the best prep volleyball club in the nation.  The showdown at Edison High in Huntington Beach on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. marks the third time the Cubs and Sea Kings have met this season.  Loyola defeated CdM in a five-set non-league marathon at Leavey Gymnasium on April 26 before it fell to the Sea Kings last Saturday in the Southern Section Div. I title match.

Cub head coach MICHAEL BOEHLE '84 wants every Loyola fan in the stands on Saturday to support the Cubs in as big a match as there could be, with the winner to be crowned national champs.

Cub LAX players dominate All-Mission League selections

Loyola lacrosse goalie JOE THEUER was named the 2017 Mission League Player-of-the-Year, headlining the selection of thirteen Cubs to the all-conference first and second team honor squads.  THEUER, NICK MOHLER, NIKO ECONN, AIDAN HESSE, JONATHAN PARTAMIAN, RYDER MORA, MASON O'HANLON and WES PRIESTLEY took home first team accolades.

MORGAN LEWIS, ROBERT HENDERSON,  WILL KUPIEC, HENRY HASSENBERG and GARRETT SMITH earned second team notice.

Loyola won the US Lacrosse Southern Section championship for the second straight season and is currently ranked fourth in the Western United States.

Cub track 4 X 400 relay team attempts to qualify for state finals

Loyola 400 meter distance star ELIJAH HODGE did not move on in the 400 meter competition at the CIF finals, but the UCSB-bound sprinter did run a monster 47 second split on the anchor leg of the Cubs' 4 X 400 relay at last Saturday's CIF Southern Section Division I finals to help the 1600 relay team qualify for tonight's CIF Masters Meet at Arcadia High School.

Loyola is looking to qualify for next weekend's State Championship meet in the Central Valley.  The Cub relay squad is composed of MICHAEL HUTTON, TRE STEWART, LUCIANO GAZCON and Hodge.  Loyola is looking to shave time off its season best mark of 3:17.61.  The school record set in 1984 is 3:13.22.
