Loyola athletics - Cub volleyball star J.P. Reilly featured in Times article, bigweek fo Loyola baseball

Loyola volleyball's Stanford-bound J.P. Reilly featured in L.A. Times article
Senior Cub volleyball standout J.P. Reilly helped lead Loyola to the 2016 CIF Southern Division I volleyball championship, and the outside hitter is once again a major player in the Cubs' quest to secure a second consecutive CIF Southern Section crown.

The Stanford-bound student-athlete maintains a 4.5 GPA and scored a 34 out of a possible 36 on the ACT. Reilly exemplifies why the word student invariably accompanies the word athlete at Loyola.  See the L.A. Times feature article on Reilly in the link below:

Cub baseball looking to stay alive in quest for playoff berth, Fortin in top five in five league statistical categories
There are seven baseball teams in the Mission League and each conference squad is capable of beating the other on any given day.

This week the Cubs have a three-game series against Chaminade, and because of Loyola's disappointing 1-5 start in the loop, every one of the remaining 12 jousts with Mission League opponents is critically important, as only four league squads will gain entry into the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.  The Cubs have won four of their last five contests, and are hoping the momentum created by that successful run will carry over into this week's series against the Eagles.  Loyola will play at Chminade in West Hills on Tuesday, will host the Eagles at Robinson Diamond on Wednesday and travel to West Hills again on Friday for the series' finale.

Senior first baseman JOE FORTIN is among the top five Mission League players in five statistical categories. The University of Rhode Island signee is fifth in the conference in batting average (.432), first in home runs (3), second in slugging percentage (.837), second in RBIs (11) and third in on base percentage (.577).  Fortin has played a major role in the recent success enjoyed by the Cubs.

Senior Columbia-bound pitcher TIMMY POST is fifth in the league in strikeouts with 28.   Amherst-bound senior infielder STEPHEN BURKE is third in the conference in runs scored with 11.  Junior catcher JEFF COSTIBOLO is tied for first with a 1.000 fielding percentage.

Keeping tabs on Cub grads - Steve Selsky makes Boston Red Sox opening day roster
Former Loyola star baseball player STEVE SELSKY '08 made the Boston Red Sox opening day 25-man roster.

Sophomore MATT McGEAUGH '15, a starting third baseman for the University of Pennsylvania baseball squad, was named Philadelphia Big Five Player-of-the-Week for, among other exploits, his five RBIs in the Quakers' recent three game series against Marist.  See the link below:

Former All-Serra League Loyola WR/DB CHAZ ANDERSON '12, who was a starting wide receiver for Boise State, bench pressed 225 lbs.19 times at Boise State's pro day.  Not bad for a 5-10, 193 lb. skill position athlete.
