Loyola volleyball looking strong, plays in prestigious Best Of the West Tournament March 10-11
Head coach MICHAEL BOEHLE '84 once again has his national powerhouse Loyola volleyball club rolling with two early season victories in matches against top opponents.
On March 4 the Cubs defeated Santa Barbara, 25-11, 25-12, 21-25, 25-16 in their first match of the season. On Tuesday Loyola downed Westlake of Westlake Village, a top ten CIF Division I-ranked squad, in three sets, 25-19, 25-22, 25-23. Tomorrow, the Cubs travel to Studio City to take on Harvard-Westlake in the first Mission League match of the 2017 campaign.
On Friday the Cubs travel south to Poway to compete in the Best of the West Tournament, considered to be the premier prep volleyball tournament in the nation. A large number of the best teams from throughout California, Hawaii and California are in the 32-team field. Loyola's Friday's pool includes Iolani (Hawaii), Newbury Park and host team Poway. Among the other top teams who will battle for national supremacy on Saturday in the Gold Division championship playoffs at the Epic Volleyball Club are Corona Del Mar, Huntington Beach, Newport Harbor, Mira Costa, Punahou (Hawaii), Perry (Arizona) and Bellarmine (San Jose). The Cubs have a number of talented players who will compete at the next level including 6' 4" senior outside hitter JP Reilly (Stanford) and 6' 8" senior middle blocker IAN PARISH (UCLA).

The Best of the West Tournament gives an early glimpse of who will end up likely be battling it out in the final four come playoff time in Division i of the CIF Southern Section. The current top four in the Southern Section Div. I coaches' poll are Corona Del Mar, Newport Harbor, Loyola and Mira Costa.
Cub golf is tearing it up on the links
It is not a stretch to say the Loyola golf team is stocked with future collegiate stars and maybe even some potential PGA players. PARKER LESTZ scored a three under par for the second time this season against traditional Southern Section power Long Beach Wilson on Monday at Wilshire Country Club. CONNOR BROWN came into the clubhouse with a two under par score card in the Cubs impressive 180-190 victory. On Tuesday in a Mission League match at Woodland Hills Country Club, Lestz's even par round was the top stroke count in Loyola's decisive 189-208 win over the Eagles. The five-time defending CIF Southern Section Central Division champion Cubs are 4-0.
The Cub JV team won the JSerra Tournament on Monday with a team score of 69. Loyola was led by MAXWELL BAUMER, RYAN DEUTSCH and DOMINICK MASI.
Loyola lacrosse ranked seventh in the West, number one in L.A. region
In this week's US Lacrosse Los Angeles Region coaches' poll, Loyola's varsity lacrosse team strengthened its hold on the top ranking as the Cubs garnered all but one first place vote. Loyola is the seventh ranked team in the Western United States according to the latest US Lacrosse regional polls.
The Cubs host L.A. Region top ten-ranked Oak Park in a non-league match on Thursday at Smith Field.
Cub swimmers keep making waves
Loyola's defending CIF Southern Section Division I champion varsity swimming and diving team continues to make waves. The undefeated Cubs left Murietta Valley in their wake on Tuesday, winning the non-league match, 113-57, at Conn Pool. Loyola will compete in the Justin Carr Relays at Harvard-Westlake on Saturday. The first race is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Former Cub hoops star earns All-Pac-12 accolades
Former Loyola McDonalds All-American, All-State and All-CIF post player THOMAS WELSH '14 earned Pac-12 Conference All-Academic second team honors for the second consecutive year as the UCLA Bruins' starting center. Welsh also made the All-Pac-12 Conference honorable mention squad. Welsh is the second leading rebounder for the number three-ranked Bruins (28-3), having pulled down 236 boards to date.
