Loyola athletics - Cub volleyball downs Corona del Mar in five sets
Cub volleyball extended to five sets in monster match against Corona del Mar
In what could be a precursor of a semifinal rematch in the CIF Southern Section Division I semifinals or tile match, Loyola's number two-ranked volleyball team held off Corona del Mar in a nail biting back and forth match before a packed house at Leavey Gymnasium on Wednesday night. The third-ranked Sea Kings gave the Cubs (21-1) everything they had before finally succumbing in the fifth and final set after pulling to within one point, 8-7. Down the stretch, Loyola outscored CdM 7-3 to pull out what was a grueling march to victory.
The match was a repeat of last season's CIF Southern Section championship contest, won by the Cubs in five sets. It is entirely possible that the teams could meet again in the title game if Loyola leapfrogs number-one-ranked Oak Park to nab the number one seed. The Cubs lost to Oak Park in the Best of the West Tournament semifinals, but Oak Park has two losses to Loyola's one. Moreover, the Cubs defeated Mira Costa in three sets, whereas Oak Park lost to Mira Costa in tournament competition.
Penn State-bound WILL BANTLE had 15 kills for the Cubs last night, BRADY WEDBUSH tallied 12 kills and Stanford-bound JP REILLY recorded 11 kills. Loyola won the first set with relative ease, but the remaining sets were hotly contested as the defending CIF Division I champion Cubs lost the second and fourth sets. The set scores for were 25-15, 23-25, 25-23, 22-25,15-10.
Loyola head coach MICHAEL BOEHLE '84 has the benefit of a top assistant who joined his staff this season. BRIAN ROFER was a middle blocker on UCLA's 1979 NCAA championship team. Rofer served as an assistant to legendary UCLA volleyball head coach AL SCATES for 22 seasons. Boehle is excited to have an assistant with such impressive experience and credentials.
