Loyola athletics - Cub track outpaces arch rival Notre Dame, Loyola sinks Harvard-Westlake in swimming
LOYOLA TRACK TEAM DEFEATS ARCH RIVAL NOTRE DAME ON THE ROAD
There is no bigger league rivalry in Southern Section track and field than that between Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and Loyola. The Cubs have dominated the series for over a quarter of a century, but the meets between the schools are invariably hotly contested. Thursday’s Mission League meet in the Valley brought out the best in both squads, and when the final points were tabulated Loyola prevailed, 72-56. Head coach MIKE PORTERFIELD and his veteran staff once again won the annual chess match with their Notre Dame counterparts in utilizing the Cubs’ superior depth.
The keys to the victory for Loyola were winning the meet’s first and last events (4X100 and 4X400 relays), sweeping the 3200m and going one - two - three in the pole vault (WILLIAM O’Brien 14’ 0”, and DECLAN DOOLEY and ALEX ALTERGOTT, both 13’5” and personal records).
Loyola’s JVs won 111-12, and the Cubs’ frost-soph team made it a sweep of the Knights’ program with a 79-49 victory.
CUB SWIMMERS SINK HARVARD-WESTLAKE
Loyola’s exceptionally talented swim team raced past Harvard-Westlake, 123-62, in the Wolverines’ home pool in Studio City on Thursday, to remain undefeated in Mission League dual meet competition. The Cub JVs defeated the Wolverines, 122-24.
LOYOLA GOLF DEFEATS WINDWARD WITH EASE
CONNOR BROWN shot a nine-hole 35 to pace Loyola’s six-time defending CIF Central Division Champion golf squad to a decisive 191-215 non-league win over Windward on Thursday.
CUB VOLLEYBALL ESCAPES WITH FIVE-SET WIN OVER ALEMANY IN MISSION HILLS
Loyola lost a lot of talent from its 2017 National Champion volleyball team, and the 2018 Blue crew showed that it is still in developmental mode on Thursday evening in Mission Hills, as a stronger than anticipated Alemany squad came close to handing the Cubs their first Mission League setback in 12 years. But Loyola prevailed in the final set of a grueling five-set match to remain undefeated in conference competition. The final set line was 25-23, 25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 20-18. The Cubs’ overall record improved to 9-1. Loyola hosts Redondo Union at Leavey Gymnasium at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
