Loyola athletics - Cub track & field sends 4 X 400 relay and two individuals to State

Cub track & field moves on to State
Loyola's Mission League co-champion track & field team finished 10th at the CIF Southern Section Division I finals on May 19. On Saturday, at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at El Camino College in Torrance, the team qualified two individuals and its 4 X 400 relay squad for the CIF State Championship meet this Friday and Saturday at Clovis Buchanan High School.

The Cubs' 4 X 400 Relay team composed of seniors ALEX JOHNSON (who is headed to UCLA to play football), COREY KUMAMOTO, MICHAEL HUTTON and junior MASON RATKOVICH ran a season best 3:18.44. Junior MASON RATKOVICH made the cut in the 800m with a personal best time of 1:54.56. Junior WILL O'BRIEN soared 15' 3" in the pole vault for a personal record, allowing him to advance to the 100th Anniversary State track & field meet.

Volleyball loses to Corona del Mar in CIF  Southern Section Div. I semifinals and to Newport Harbor in State regional semifinals
Loyola's Mission League champion volleyball team's season ended last week in the CIF State Southern California Regional playoffs as the number-three seeded Cubs were swept by CIF Southern Section Division I runner-up Newport Harbor in three sets. The Sailors lost to CIF D-I champion Corona del Mar in the title match after falling to the Sea Kings in the Southern Section championship match on May 19. Corona del Mar will undoubtedly be crowned National Champion, a prize bestowed on Loyola in 2017. The Cubs defeated CIF San Diego Open Division champion La Costa Canyon in five sets in the first round of the regionals.

The youthful Loyola squad started two sophomores, and will again be in the thick of CIF competition in the spring of 2019. The Cubs finished the campaign with yet another undefeated league ledger (12-0) and an overall record of 23-4.

Loyola golf finishes as CIF Southern Section Central Division runner-up
After winning six consecutive CIF Southern Section Central Division titles, the Cubs were finally stopped short of yet another title in the CIF Southern Section Central Division championship tournament, finishing as the runner-up to team champion Palos Verdes at Lakewood Country Club on May 14.
