Loyola wins Mission League championship with 73-64 triumph over Harvard-Westlake
Loyola track & field head coach MIKE PORTERFIELD commenced practices for the 2017 season much earlier than usual. The results of the additional preseason work came to fruition on the track at Smith Field on Monday afternoon as multiple Cub athletes recorded personal records in a wide array of events, helping to propel Loyola to a 73-64 victory over Harvard-Westlake in a fiercely contested and final dual meet of the season. The triumph kept the Cubs' undefeated dual meet record (6-0) intact and earned them the 2017 Mission League title.
Among the Loyola luminaries who garnered points and put forth lifetime best efforts were senior ELIJAH HODGE with a clocking of 48.86 in the 400m; senior CHARLIE SHERMAN with a 1:58.58 in the 800m; junior COREY KUMAMOTO with a 1:59.20 in the 800m; Sherman with a 4:18.55 in the 1600m; freshman ANTHONY STONE with a 4:18.87 in the 1600m; senior SHANE Bissell with a 9:18.58 in the 3200; senior GIOVANNI TREJOS with a 15:43 time in the 110m high hurdles; senior WILLIAM PASCALE with a 15.94 in the 110m HH; senior TY NGO with a 14' 6" pole vault. Columbia-bound senior MICHAEL KELLY scored points in the pole vault, and sophomore WILLIAM O'BRIEN had a PR of 13' 0" in the pole vault.
Monday's win was another in a long line of sterling team performances and brilliant, tactical coaching efforts that confirmed Loyola's long held place among the best prep track & field dual meet teams in the country.
The Mission League prelims are scheduled for May 1 and the finals are slated for May 4.
