Loyola athletics - Cub soccer defeats Cathedral in Regional semifinals - Loyola LAX hosts archrival Palos Verdes Saturday under the lights
Loyola soccer defeats Cathedral 2-1, plays at San Clemente Saturday for CIF State Southern California Regional Championship
In an emotion charged CIF State Southern California Division I Regional soccer semifinal match on Thursday afternoon, Loyola's Mission League champion varsity soccer squad forged ahead of Cathedral, 2-1, with three minutes left in the contest on a header by Cub senior defender SEAN TRAYLOR. The dramatic goal proved to be the match winner. Head coach CHRIS WALTER's club will head down I-5 to San Clemente on Saturday for the regional championship match against the Tritons of San Clemente (19-5-6). The match is scheduled to get underway at 4:00 p.m.
In the semifinal barn burner against the Phantoms junior Cub forward AIDAN CUEVAS tied the school record for goals scored with his 33rd blast into the net 11 minutes into the contest. His record goal is shared with varsity assistant TREVOR MUTCH.
Junior goalie NICHOLAS BARR-MIRA made multiple saves for Loyola,, including one on a free kick. Barr-Mira, the brother of Cub alumnus ANTHONY BARR '10, who is an All-Pro linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings, also shines as a kicker for the Cub varsity football team. Loyola has relinquished just 15 goals in 33 matches this season. That is an incredible statistic. Walter's team are always outstanding on defense, and this season's squad is no exception.
San Clemente, in a huge upset, defeated CIF Division I champion Santa Barbara, 3-0, yesterday in Santa Barbara. San Clemente High School is located at 700 Avenida Pico, San Clemente, CA 92673. The Cubs are hoping for a big turnout of Big Blue supporters to root them on to the title..

Loyola lacrosse, ranked number one in the Los Angeles region, hosts number-two ranked archrival Palos Verdes tomorrow night
The intensity of the rivalry between Loyola and Palos Verdes is unmatched in California prep lacrosse. The Cubs, ranked number one by U.S. Lacrosse in the Los Angeles region, host the number-two ranked Sea Kings Saturday on the pitch at Bob Smith Field at 7:00 p.m. This marks the fourth consecutive season in a row that the schools have met in which Loyola has been ranked first and Palos Verdes second heading into the non-league match. An overflow crowd is expected for what promises to be a battle royal between two programs who, to state it mildly, do not have a great deal of fondness for one another..
