Loyola athletics - Cub LAX wins second consecutive L.A. Area US Lacrosse title, V-ball cruises in first round
Loyola defeats Palos Verdes to win US Lacrosse Los Angeles Area championship
In an emphatic exhibition of dogged determination, fierce focus, excellent execution and sheer will, Loyola's varsity lacrosse team won its second consecutive US Lacrosse Los Angeles Area title on Wednesday afternoon at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach by coming back from an early 0-3 deficit to ultimately manhandle Palos Verdes, 11-5, scoring eight unanswered points in the second through fourth stanzas. When the final seconds ticked off the clock, jubilant pandemonium reigned as players and fans alike rushed the field in unbridled excitement to celebrate what was an utterly superior effort by the Cubs.
It was a great team win for Loyola (20-4), which had been embarrassed in a 6-2 loss to the Sea Kings in a non-league game played on April 11 earlier in the season. This time around the Cubs matched - and exceeded - PV's physicality and displayed extraordinary ferocity on both sides of the ball in holding the Sea Kings scoreless in the second half. There can be little argument that Loyola played its best game of the season in the championship victory.
On Saturday at noon at Palos Verdes High School Loyola will play Orange County champion Foothill which stunned the Orange County number one seed Corona del Mar, 9-3, on Wednesday. The Cubs (20-4) defeated Foothill, 13-7, in an intense non-league game played at Smith Field on March 11. The Knights play a physical brand of lacrosse, and will be out to avenge their earlier set back to Loyola. The Cubs will be vying for their second consecutive US Lacrosse Southern Section crown in Saturday's contest.
