Cub baseball season ends on high note, four-year base team manager gets hit on Senior DAY in 7-0 win against Crespi
It wasn't the year the Cubs envisioned back in February, but the 2017 varsity baseball season ended on a high note, as Loyola closed out the campaign with a three-game sweep of Crespi Carmelite, beating the Celts by scores of 14-4, 3-2 and 7-0.
The good news is that the Cubs never gave up on the season and went 6-2-1 in their last nine league games. Their hope for possible consideration as a wild card selection in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs, which get underway next week, were dashed when Alemany stole one of three games from Chaminade in its final league series. Loyola finished 7-10-1 and in fifth place while Alemany concluded the Mission League campaign 8-10, good for fourth place.
A story in the Los Angeles Times yesterday about dedicated four-year Cub baseball manager DECLAN FLOYD was quite heart warming. The Northwestern University-bound senior who had never played baseball at Loyola was the the designated hitter in yesterday's shut out of Crespi at Robinson Diamond on Senior Day. Floyd's single was a personal highlight of his time at The High. Here is the link to the story which has captivated a wide audience: http://www.latimes.com/sports/highschool/varsity-times/la-sp-high-school-sports-updates-a-manager-gets-to-hit-and-reflects-on-1494563880-htmlstory.html
Amherst-bound senior STEPHEN BURKE led the Mission League with a .433 batting average. Rhode Island-bound senior JOE FORTIN finished third in the batting average category, hitting .405. Fortin also tied for first in the conference in home runs with six, and led the league by a wide margin with a slugging percentage of .756. Fortin was second in runs batted in, and second in on base percentage (.516). Burke was fifth in the league in that category with a .500 average. Columbia-bound senior pitcher TIM POST finished the season with the fifth most strikeouts in the Mission League, including 10 against Crespi on Thursday.
Loyola LAX looks to repeat as US Lacrosse Southern Section champs on Saturday, multiple seniors to continue lacrosse careers in college
With a decisive 11-5 victory over archrival Palos Verdes on Wednesday to capture the US Lacrosse Los Angeles Area championship for the second consecutive year, Loyola's varsity lacrosse team set the stage for a potential repeat as Southern Section champion. The Cubs will play Foothill of Anaheim on Saturday at noon at Palos Verdes High School for the section title.
Saturday's game for all the marbles will be the last contest for a number of Loyola seniors who will go on to play collegiate lacrosse. In order of uniform number, the college bound Cubs include MASON O'HANLON (Babson College), JONATHAN PARTAMIAN - who had four goals against PV - (Syracuse University), NICK MOHLER (Boston University), JOE THEUER (Tufts University), RYDER MORA (University of Maryland), GRIFFIN CAPPELETTI (Oberlin College), NICO ECONN (Air Force Academy), and MORGAN LEWIS (Washington College of Maryland). The seniors will be missed, but there is a large contingent of talented players returning next season, including the members of Loyola's junior varsity squad which finished the season 19-1-1 and 10-0 in league. The JV squad won all five games in the season-ending Nathan Powell Southwest Invitational, outscoring its opponents by a combined score of 38-9.
Cub volleyball pushed hard by determined Servite in secong round road win
Spurred on by the "Asylum", Servite's renowned, raucous student cheering contingent, the Friars gave Loyola's number one seeded volleyball squad a real run for its money in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs on Thursday night before a packed house at Servite's home gym. The Cubs escaped with a four set victory, 25-22, 25-23, 33-35, 25-19.
Loyola will play Beckman (31-3) of Irvine at the Patriots' gym in Irvine on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Beckman defeated Edison of Huntington Beach in five sets on Thursday. The winner of Saturday's match will play the victor of the match between Newport Harbor and Westlake of Westlake Village. The competitive Servite match hopefully prepared the defending CIF D-I champion Cubs for what promises to be a very tough quarterfinal match on Saturday. Beckman High School is located at 3588 Bryan Avenue, Irvine, CA 92602. Head coach MICHAEL BOEHLE is hopeful for a large turnout of Loyola supporters to counter the rabid Patriot fans.
