Loyola athletics - Cub LAX earns second seed in SS North, league prelims/finals in multiple sports this week

Loyola lacrosse awarded number two seed in US Lacrosse Southern Section North playoffs
Loyola's Mission League champion lacrosse squad earned the number two seed in the US Lacrosse Southern Section North Division playoffs that get underway today.  The Mission League champion Cubs (15-4, 9-1) were awarded the second seed based on their trouncing of then number one-ranked Harvard Weslake, 13-6, last week.

Loyola, the defending Southern Section champion, hosts number 15 seeded Sierra Canyon at Smith Field today at 5:00 p.m. in a first round game in the field of 16.   Palos Verdes, which downed the Cubs in a non-league match earlier in the season, is the number one seed.  To have a chance to avenge the loss to the Sea Kings, Loyola might have to get by number three seed Harvard-Westlake in the semifinals once again.  It would be the third meeting of the season between the Cubs and Wolverines if that were to occur.

Cub golf plays in Mission league Tournament No. 3 today
Loyola's five time defending CIF Southern Section Central Division champion golf team (14-1) plays in Mission League Tournament No. 3 at Lakeside Country Club in Toluca Lake today.  The meet qualifies golfers for the upcoming Central Division Championship Tournament.  The Cubs won every match in league play.

Loyola track & field shows well in Mission league prelims
On a hot Monday afternoon at Occidental College in Eagle Rock in the league prelims, Loyola's Mission League champion track & field team qualified a large number of athletes for the finals.  The finals will be held on Thursday at Occidental College commencing at 2:00 p.m.  

In the prelims, UCSB-bound senior ELIJAH HODGE ran a personal best, first place time of 48.62 in the 400 as he continues to close in on the school record.

Cub runners secured five out of the first six spots in the 1600 meter race. Seniors CHARLIE SHERMAN and ALEJANDRO SALINAS finished in first and second place, respectively.  Junior DAVID McANDREWS came in third.  Freshman ANTHONY STONE, who has run the top reported 1600 time in the nation (4:18.87) for a ninth grader, came in fifth, and junior JOSHUA MA finished in sixth place.

Senior GOIVANNI TREJOS clocked a 39.58 n the 300 intermediate hurdles, finishing in second place.  Senior WILLIAM PASCALE placed fourth in the event.

Most of the varsity field events will be contested in the finals only.

Loyola volleyball (23-1) finishes Mission League without losing a single set
Loyola's Mission League champion varsity volleyball squad completed the regular season without losing a single set (36-0) in Mission League competition.  On Monday the defending CIF Southern Section Division I champion Cubs (23-1, 12-0) defeated Chaminade at Leavey Gymnasium, 25-9, 25-17, 25-21.  The CIF playoffs commence on May 9.

Cub tennis finishes second in Mission League
Loyola's varsity tennis team (13-5) soundly defeated Crespi, 16-2, last week to secure a second place finish, behind champion Harvard-Westlake, in the Mission League.  Today the Cub net men participate in the Mission League prelims.

USC-bound Loyola water polo player earns silver medal in FINA International Tournament
Graduating senior MARKO VAVIC, who will play collegiate water polo at USC, was a member of the men's water polo team that earned a silver medal in the FINA International Tournament held last week in Surfers Paradise, Australia.
