Loyola dominates Foothill in CIF Southern Section lacrosse championship
It is usually very difficult to beat a good team twice in the same season in any sport. But that was not the case for Loyola's varsity lacrosse team on a beautiful afternoon on Saturday in Palos Verdes as the Cubs dominated Orange County champion Foothill in a display of near perfect execution, winning the Los Angles/Orange County title bout by a score of 13-4.
The victory brought home Loyola's second consecutive U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section championship, and further elevated the Cubs into a nationally elite group of prep lacrosse squads. Once again Loyola competed with ferocity on both sides of the ball, seemingly scoring at will while shutting down the Knights' prolific offense. University of Maryland-bound senior RYDER MORA was the goal leader for the Cubs, firing five into the back of the net. Loyola had beaten Foothill 13-7 in a non-league game played on March 11.
Loyola finished its second consecutive U.S. Lacrosse championship campaign with a 21-4 record.
Cub swim and dive team finishes second in CIF Southern Section Division I finals
Only 10.5 points separated champion Dana Hills and Loyola on Saturday evening at Riverside College in the CIF Southern Section Division I swim finals, as the Dolphins barely nosed out the Cubs, 292.5-282. Loyola's swimmers gave supreme effort, but came up just short in defense of the school's 2016 Southern Section title. But the runner-up finish was highlighted by a record setting performance in two events.
Loyola's 400 free relay team (ANDY KIM, EMMETT PERNECKY, CONNOR LEE and SEAN LEE) broke the Division I record with a scorching 3:01.53 time. The Cubs also set the Division I record in the 200 yard free relay (CADE BOSCH, MARKO VAVIC, SEAN LEE and CONOR LEE) with a 1:22.13 clocking. University of Pennsylvania-bound SEAN LEE finished first in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 1:45.98. He has the national prep leading mark in the United States in the 200 IM. Lee also finished first in the 100 yard butterfly with a 47.72 clocking.
Loyola is among the best prep aquatics squads in the nation, and the future of Cub swim & dive continues to look bright with a large contingent of talented underclassmen in the ranks.
