CUBS’ LACROSSE DEFEATS FOOTHILL IN SEASON OPENER

Loyola won 8-5 in its season opener against Foothill High School. Foothill’s defense came out aggressive and pressured Loyola as they attacked the crease.  Foothill took an early 2-1 lead which set the stage for a physical and chippy game. The Loyola defense held strong as the offense built a steady 4-2 lead at the half.  The score closed a bit in the third.

It was mid-third quarter, when a double teamed KAISER FRY made a falling down pass to ALEX HOROWITZ high on the crease, who made a nice bounce shot finding the back of the net, which made the difference. The dramatic pass, catch, fall, and shot combination boosted the team’s energy level. Loyola took complete control for the remainder of the game. The Cubs went to an 8-4 lead going into the final couple minutes which allowed other players to earned some field time.

ALEX HOROWITZ finished the game with four goals, OWEN GAFFNEY had two goals and SPEED FRY, MATT GARVEY and RONAN GALLAGHER each had one apiece.

WILL PARDUCCI had a number of exceptional stops in the cage for the Cubs and finished the game with 15 saves. The primary Defensive unit anchored by long poles WILL KUPIEC, SHANE McAUSLAND and COLIN HAWKINS, start the season where they left off allowing only two man-down goals and one in transition.

Maxlaxla.com reports that coach Seth Cohen said “It was a little bit sloppy on both sides of the ball. I think emotions ran pretty high…. we were fortunate at the end of the day to put more balls [in the goal] than they did.”

Loyola will play Santa Margarita on the road this Wednesday night.

JV LACROSSE GOES DOWN TO FOOTHILL

Loyola JV lost to Foothill High School in its season opener 11-9.  Down most of the game, the Cubs battled to take the lead 9-8 late in the fourth quarter. A last-minute Foothill surge reversed the lead to a 9-10 deficit and a final goal was tossed into an unguarded Cubs goal.

The Cubs had good offensive production from attacks HENRY KUPIEC (3 goals), AIDAN LEE (3 goals) and MATTEO SILVESTRI (2 goals). Middies FINN TIPTON, JACKSON WARNER, PETER KILEY, and ANDREW SCARSI had solid performances moving the ball and running the offense.

CHARLIE MAJCHER a long-stick middie made the bulk of the trips to the dot, facing-off with his defensive long pole.

Defense had respectable performance from JACK SHOEMAKER, HARRISON MILLS and CARSON KENNALLY. The team will benefit as the defense gels as a unit over time.

JV will play Santa Margarita on the road this Wednesday before the Varsity game.
