Loyola athletics - Cub Football - CUB BASKETBALL SCORES HUGE VICTORY IN CIF D-1 PLAYOFFS

Loyola defeats Redondo Union on huge three-point step back dagger with 10 seconds left in CIF D-1 first round playoff tilt
Bay League champion Redondo Union hosted Loyola on Wednesday night in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 basketball playoffs The Sea Hawks were favored against the Cubs, who ended the regular season as the fourth place finisher in the rugged Mission League.

After surging to a 14-9 first quarter lead, Loyola trailed by six at halftime, 30-24. At the conclusion of the third stanza the Cubs were behind 46-41. The fourth quarter was nothing short of a proverbial dogfight. With 1:07 left in the playoff contest, the score was knotted, 56-56. Loyola junior wing MASON BUTLER calmly drained a step-back three point beauty with just 10 seconds remaining, causing Cub partisans to erupt in jubilation. Loyola stopped Redondo's last gasp bid to tie the game and left the beach city with an impressive 59-56 first round playoff victory. Junior post JAMES KEEFE led the Cubs' scoring effort with 16 points.

There won't be an empty seat in the house at the 7:00 p.m tip off on Friday night at Pasadena High School (2925 E. Sierra Madre Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91107) when Loyola takes on the third-seeded Bulldogs in their home gym. The Cubs fell by a lopsided score to Pasadena in the Rose City Tournament way back on December 1. They are looking forward to avenging that loss and shocking the Bulldogs (20-6, 13-1), winners of the Pacific League.

Loyola's arduous grind through the Mission League has prepared an all-underclass starting lineup well for a second shot at redemption against the third seeded squad in the Division 1 playoffs.
