Loyola athletics. - Cub basketball headed to quarterfinals, soccer wins first round match

Cub basketball wins second round CIF playoff game

Loyola's varsity basketball team hosted Huntington Beach on Friday in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1A playoffs and hung on for a 70-64 victory over the Oilers, who fought back from a 17 point deficit to make it close in the final two minutes.  KHRISTION COURSEAULT led the Cubs with 16 points.

At Leavy Gymnasium on Tuesday evening, Loyola will host the Spartans of La Canada (25-4), the winners of 15 consecutive games after a 60-53 home win over San Clemente on Friday.  It will take a focused effort by the Cubs (18-9) and a great turnout by the fanatical "Levey Loonies", to end La Canada's season.  This is a game you do not want to miss.

Loyola soccer wins first round CIF playoff game against Simi Valley

The Cubs' first round CIF Southern Section Division I playoff match was delayed for a day because of the rain storm that swamped Southern California on Friday.  The postponement carried no ill effects for Loyola, as the Cubs had an offensive explosion after a 1-1 tie at intermission en route to a 6-1 victory over Simi Valley on the losers' home pitch.  LUCIANO GAZCON scored a hat trick to pace Loyola.  The Cubs will host Santa Barbara, the squad they defeated in last season's CIF title match, on Wednesday at Smith Field.  The Dons (20-1-5), are the number three seed in Division I.  The match promises to be a thriller.
