Loyola athletics - Cross Country team rolling, coach Lalo Diaz named Coach-of-the-Year at Mt. SAC's 70th Anniversary race, Cub sophomore baseball player commits to Georgia Tech
Loyola cross country team continues its run as one of elite squads in nation
As sure as the leaves are changing to signal the arrival of fall and the Santa Ana winds blow through the Southland as October runs its course, Loyola's championship tradition in cross country is being upheld in impressive style once again.
On Saturday at the 70th Annual Mt. SAC Invitational at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, considered the nation's premier in-season prep cross country meet, Cub runners broke the school record on the challenging course, running a combined time of 75:40, shaving one minute and seven seconds off the previous standard set in 2013. Loyola finished second in the Division I sweepstakes race behind the nation's top ranked cross country squad, Great Oak. The Cub JV team won the Division I National Championship race, and Loyola's sophomores won the the Mt. SAC sophomore team title.
The varsity which won the Cerritos Invitational on September 2, the Rosemead Invitational on September 9, the San Diego Mt. Carmel Invitational on September 16 and the Bell-Jeff Invitational on September 30, was led by senior SHANE BISSELL. He clocked a 14:46 time, good for a fifth place finish. The Cubs other runners finished the race, placing 15th, 17th, 19th, 20th, 22nd, and 36th.
The JV squad was led by senior COREY KUMAMOTO's first place run. The sophomores were paced by first place finisher BEIKWAW YANKEY.
Long time Loyola head coach Dr. EDUARDO "LALO" DIAZ was honored by the Mt. SAC Invitational as Coach-of-the-Year.
The Cubs are continuing their decades-long dominance in league action as they won both Mission League Cluster Meets on September 26 and October 10. The Mission League finals are scheduled for November 1 at Crescenta Valley Park.
Sophomore baseball player Kevin Parada commits to Georgia Tech
A tweet in Los Angeles Times prep sports editor Eric Sondheimer's twitter feed on Monday announced that Loyola sophomore outfielder KEVIN PARADA, who started for the Cub varsity baseball team as a freshman last spring, accepted a scholarship offer tendered by Georgia Tech during his visit to Atlanta over the weekend.
Parada is also an outstanding football player who starts at strong safety on the Cub football squad which concludes Mission League play at Alemany on November 3 and is hoping to earn a playoff berth. His father JASON PARADA '84 also played football and baseball for Loyola. Jason currently coaches the inside linebackers on the varsity football team.
