Loyola completes another banner year (2017-2018) in athletics
The book closed on Loyola's 2017-2018 school year when the Cubs' 4 X 800 Relay team set a school record last weekend at the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina. And yet again, what a year it was for Loyola athletics. Seven of the school's athletic teams won Mission League titles,and two more were conference runners-up. Two squads finished in the top 25 national rankings, and a third won a Southern Section title. Ten Cub teams participated in playoff competition. Here is a summary of Loyola's accomplishments in each sport.
FOOTBALL (Head Coach: Dr. Ricardo Pedroarias '84; Record:5-5) Under new head coach Rick Pedroarias '84, the Cub defense allowed the fewest average points per game of any Loyola team since 2004. The most impressive wins were against St. Augustine of San Diego (41-0) and Cathedral of Los Angeles (17-7). Senior TOMMY VANIS was the team's MVP. He is headed to Cal. Loyola lost three contests by a combined total of just ten points. Eight players from last season's squad will be playing collegiate football. The program is in great hands with Pedroarias at the helm.
CROSS COUNTRY (Head Coach: Dr. Lalo Diaz; Undefeated in dual meets) The Cubs' perennially dominant cross country team was once again the Mission League champion. Loyola finished fourth in the CIF Southern Section Division I finals and in fourth place in the CIF State championship meet.
WATER POLO (Head Coach: Erik Healy; Record: 19-14) MIssion League runner-up, advanced to CIF Division I quarterfinals.
BASKETBALL (Head Coach Jamal Adams '90; Record: 14-13) Finished in fourth place in Mission League. Defeated Redondo in first round of CIF Div. I-A playoffs, before dropping second round game to Pasadena. The JV team finished 21-5 and won the Price and Millikan Tournaments. The freshman team completed the season with a 22-4 record and an undefeated 12-0 ledger in Mission League competition. The varsity returns most of of its roster and starting lineup.
SOCCER (Head Coach: Chris Walter '93; Record: 25-3-6) Undefeated Mission League champions. CIF State Southern California Regional champions.Loyola finished its banner campaign ranked seventh in the state and 24th in the nation. The JV squad won the Mission League title and completed the season with a 15-3-2 record.
GOLF (Head Coach:Robb Gorr; Record: 13-2) Undefeated MIssion League champions. The Cubs finished as the CIF Southern Section Central Division runner-up after winning six consecutive Central Division titles.
TENNIS (Head Coach:Brian held '93; Record: 11-5) The Cubs finished second in the Mission League, before falling to the number one seed in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.
LACROSSE (Head Coach: Seth Cohen: Record:21-4) For the third consecutive year the Cubs won the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section championship after securing the Greater Los Angeles Region (Northern Division) title with an impressive victory over archrival Palos Verdes. Loyola defeated South Division champion St. Margaret's Episcopal 10-9 in overtime in the Southern Section title match. Senior face-off AIDAN HESSE was acclaimed the U.S. Lacrosse Greater Los Angeles Player of the Year, and junior goal keeper WILL PARDUCCI was named the Greater Los Angeles Defensive Player of the Year. The Cubs were ranked number three in MaxPreps' final state poll.
SWIMMING & DIVING (Head Coach: Kevin Mann; Record: Undefeated (7-0) in dual meets) The Cubs' aquatics squad was, as usual, crowned Mission League champion after dominating performances in the pool.. National swim power Loyola was the runner-up in the ultra-competitive CIF Southern Section Division I finals. Junior CONNER LEE was a record setter for the Cubs. He will be a key returnee in 2019.
BASEBALL (Head Coach: Sean Buller; Record 14-16) The Cubs had a maddening up-and-down season on the diamond. Sophomore outfielder KEVIN PARADA earned first team All-Mission League honors. He has committed to play baseball for Georgia Tech. Loyola's freshman team compiled an 18-4 record.
TRACK & FIELD (Head Coach: Mike Porterfield '73; Dual Meet Record: 5-1) The Cubs were Mission League co-champions. Junior MASON RATKOVICH ran the third fastest 800 meter time (1:52.67) in school annals at the 100th California State Championship meet. The 4 X 800 Relay team ran a school record 7:40.67 at the New Balance Nationals last weekend in Greensboro, North Carolina. Junior WILL O'BRIEN cleared 15' 3" in the pole vault in the state prelims.
VOLLEYBALL (Head Coach: Michael Boehle '84; Record: 23-3) The Cubs swept though the Mission League with a 12-0 record. In the playoffs, Loyola advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division I semifinals, and also made it to the semifinals of the CIF State Southern California Division I Regional Tournament, falling to champion Corona del Mar. The Cubs were ranked number four in the nation in MaxPreps' final poll. The Mission league champion Loyola JV squad was 26-3. Two sophomores started for the varsity club, predicting continued success in coming seasons.
