Loyola athletics - Big days for Cub track & field and swim teams
Loyola track prevails over archrival Notre Dame, 79-48
Loyola's track & field dual meet record over the last 30 years is nothing short of amazing. The Cubs have lost only four dual meets in that span, a record of success virtually unheard of. In the Mission League there is only one Loyola interscholastic meet every season that is usually close, the down-to-the-wire skirmishes with archrival Notre Dame. On a warm afternoon Thursday head coach MIKE PORTERFIELD's track and field squad came through once again in its home meet against the Knights as the Cubs posted a more decisive than expected, 79-48, victory.
Cub swimming squad sinks Harvard-Westlake 123-60
Loyola's defending CIF Southern Section Division I champion swimming and dive team raced to a big, 123-60, win over rival Harvard-Westlake at Conn Pool on Thursday afternoon.
Last Friday evening the Cub swimmers took home the gold trophy at the Justin Carr Relays at Harvard-Westlake.
Number two-ranked Loyola volleyball continues to spike opposition
Coach MICHAEL BOEHLE's defending CIF Southern Section Division I champion varsity volleyball club continued its success at the net this week. In Encino on Tuesday, the Cubs made quick work of Crespi as they took out the Celts in three sets, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19. On Wednesday in Redondo Beach, Loyola defeated Redondo in four sets, 25-20, 25-20, 24-26, 25-12. Alemany proved no match for the Big Blue on Thursday, as the Cubs won handily, 25-15, 25-13, 25-22.
Loyola is ranked second in this week's CIF Southern Section Division I coaches poll.
Cub lacrosse ranked fourth in Western United States
Following its impressive 13-7 milestone victory over Santa Ana Foothill on Saturday, Loyola's defending US Lacrosse Southern Section champion lacrosse squad moved up to the number four spot in the Western United States in this week's US Lacrosse Magazine coaches poll.
On Tuesday evening in La Canada the Cubs dominated St Francis in an 18-2 win that raised their season record to 5-0. Today the Big Blue hosts Chaminade at Bob Smith Field at 3:00 p.m.
Loyola travels to San Diego on Saturday to take on the US Lacrosse Western region's number one-ranked team, Torrey Pines, in the Cubs' biggest tilt to date. The first face-off is at 6:00 p.m.
Tufts-bound Cub goalie JOE THEUER had 12 saves in Loyola's huge win over Foothill and was recently named as a national player of the year candidate.
Loyola baseball struggling
The Cub varsity baseball team lost its first two Mission League games to Notre Dame by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Loyola travels to Notre Dame this afternoon for the last of its three game series against the Knights.
Injuries and a slow starts at the plate have plagued the Cubs thus far.
