A sold out house and two raucous student cheering sections created a highly charged back drop to the intensely played CIF Southern Scection Division 1A playoff semifinal basketball game between Mission League rivals Loyola and Harvard-Westlake at Leavey Gymnasium Friday night. The Cubs got out to an early nine point lead but allowed the Wolverines back in it by halftime as Loyola led by a point, 25-24.
Loyola hung tough until the very end. Trailing the Wolverines by just three, 38-35, with 3:51 left in the contest, the Cubs couldn't curtail Harvard-Westlake's final rally and ended the season with a 54-45 loss to their arch rivals. Loyola finished the 2016-2017 campaign with a 19-10 record. H-W will play Pasadena, a team the Cubs defeated 66-53 in an early season tournament, for the 1A title next weekend. Loyola also beat CIF 1AA finalist Maranatha of Pasadena in the same tournament.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, head coach JAMAL ADAMS and his staff did a stellar job in coaching the Cubs to a second consecutive CIF playoff semifinal game.
Cub soccer stopped by Palos Verdes
Following Wednesday's shutout of one-loss, number three seed Santa Barbara in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Div. I playoffs, it appeared Loyola's varsity soccer team was on a late season roll, but on Saturday afternoon the Cubs could not find the groove as their season ended in a 3-1 loss to Palos Verdes on the Sea Kings' home pitch in the quarterfinals.

Senior pitcher TIM POST threw five shutout innings and struck out seven before other hurlers took the mound for the Cubs in a season-opening 3-2 victory over Claremont in a Bonita Tournament game played at Loyola's Robinson Diamond on Saturday. NIK TRAPANI had two RBIs for the Cubs.

Loyola's defending Southern Section champion varsity lacrosse squad defeated perennial power St. Margaret's of San Juan Capistrano, 7-5, on Saturday in its season opener played in Orange County. The Cubs, ranked number one in the preseason Los Angeles region coaches poll, dominated time of possession.
