Loyola athletics - Annual volleyball monster match against archrival Mira Costa at UCLA's John Wooden Center

Number two-ranked Loyola volleyball team's annual battle against archrival Mira Costa at UCLA
Former UCLA All-American, Olympian and beach volleyball legend SINJIN SMITH is a Loyola grad whose son HAGEN '14 was a Cub All-CIF star and is currently a starting setter/opposite on UCLA's varsity volleyball team. Also starting for the Bruins at libero is former Cub JACKSON BANTLE '14.  Loyola senior middle blocker IAN PARISH (6' 9") is headed to UCLA on a volleyball scholarship, so it seems only fitting that the Cubs' much anticipated Friday night  showdown with archrival Manhattan Beach Mira Costa will be played at UCLA's John Wooden Center.

On Tuesday, Loyola put away St. Francis in La Canada in three sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-22, in a Mission League match.  On Wednesday the defending CIF Southern Section Division I champion Cubs defeated Kamehameha of Hawaii at Leavey Gymnasium, 25-17, 25-23, 28-26.  Tonight, Loyola (13-1), ranked second in the CIF Div. I coaches poll, travels to West Hills to take on Mission League foe Chaminade in its final tune up before Friday's monster match against Costa.  .

The Loyola - Mira Costa volleyball match is usually played at Loyola Marymount University's Gersten Pavilion, but notwithstanding the change in venue the match is still expected to draw thousands of spectators as usual.  See the link below:

Cub golf continues impressive play
Loyola's five-time defending CIF Southern Section Central Division golf squad continued its sizzling performances on the links with a 189-206 victory over traditional CIF power Los Alamitos on Monday at Wilshire Country Club.  Freshman BRIAN ARNOLD shot a one-under 34.  On Tuesday, the undefeated Cubs (7-0) had the low score, 207-223, against Windward at rain-soaked Rancho Park Golf Course.

Loyola tennis improves to 8-1
Loyola's varsity tennis team decisively defeated Crespi, 14-4, on Wednesday at Braemar Country Club to improve its overall record to 8-1.  The match against league favorite Harvard-Westlake on Tuesday was cancelled due to rain.

Cub baseball continues struggles, looking for turnaround win
Junior pitcher GARRETT SPICUZZA pitched well in Tuesday's home varsity baseball game against Alemany, but did not get help at the plate.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Cubs loaded the bases with no outs, but failed to score a run, continuing an unfortunate pattern in the early season.  Loyola is now 0-5 in the Mission League and is in dire need of a turnaround victory against Alemany in Mission Hills on Friday afternoon.
