Loyola athletics _ Cub track & field shows well at league finals, Loyola LAX crushes Thousand Oaks in second round
Loyola's track & field qualifies large number of athletes for CIF Division I prelims
Loyola's Mission League champion track &field team sizzled at the league finals at Occidental College on Thursday, as 15 athletes in multiple events and the Cubs' 4 X 400 relay team qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division I prelims which are scheduled for May 13 at Trabuco Hills High School.
UCSB-bound senior ELIJAH HODGE set another personal record, finishing first in the 400 with a time of 48.45, in continuation of his quest to set the school record in the event. Hodge also ran the anchor leg on the Cubs' 4 X 400 relay team which shaved three seconds off its previous season-best time, clocking 3:17.34, which put Loyola in first place.
Among the most impressive efforts of the day were those of 30-year veteran coach LALO DIAZ's distance runners who took the first five places in the 1600 and top four in the 3200. Senior CHARLIE SHERMAN was first in the four-lapper with a time of 4:17.69. He was followed in order by senior ALEJANDRO SALINAS, freshman ANTHONY STONE, and juniors JOHUA MA and DAVID McANDREWS. Junior SHANE BISSELL led the Cubs in the 3200 with a time of 9:20.40. Finishing in second through fourth places, respectively, were juniors BRANDON COBIAN and LIAM JAMIESON and senior Alejandro Salinas.
Senior GIOVANNI TREJOS had a first place finish in the 110 high hurdles with a 15.24 mark. Senior WILLIAM PASCALE placed third with a time of 15.36. Trejos also finished first in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 38.37. Pascale placed fourth.
Senior TY NGO placed second in the pole vault with a 14' 6" vault, and Columbia-bound senior MICHAEL KELLY finished in third place. Junior CAMERON MILLER placed third in the triple jump with a 42-04.75 mark.
The 4 X 400 relay team established itself as one of the state's best with its 3:17.34 season best time. The team was composed of senior CLAUDE STEWART, senior LUCIANO GAZCON, junior MICHAEL HUTTON and Hodge. Head coach MICHAEL PORTERFIELD believes that the 4 X 400 relay team could continue to lower its times as it is hitting its stride at just the right time. Also, keep an eye on Hodge in the 400, where he just may end up setting the school record.
Cub lacrosse team is dominant again in 17-2 drubbing of Thousand Oaks in quarterfinal playoff win
Loyola's Mission League champion varsity lacrosse squad dominated again in the quarterfinals of the US Lacrosse Los Angeles Area playoffs at Smith Field on Thursday. The Cubs defeated Marmonte League champion Thousand Oaks, 17-2, after punishing Sierra Canyon, 16-3, in a first round contest on Tuesday.
The big upset of the day was Oaks Christian's 4-3 win over number three seed Harvard-Westlake. Loyola will play Oaks Christian in the semifinals on Saturday at Culver City High School at 5:00 p.m. The Lions (16-5) are expected to give the Cubs (17-4) a run for their money.
If Loyola wins on Saturday it will play the winner of the semifinal match between top seed Palos Verdes and Agoura. The Los Angeles Area finals will be held next Wednesday at Manhattan Beach Mira Costa at 4:00 p.m. PV is expected to win its semifinal bout, so if Loyola can vanquish Oaks Christian on Saturday, it will have a chance to avenge its non-league loss to the arch rival Sea Kings.
