Loyola basketball still in race for second place in Mission League
With three Mission League games remaining on the slate, including tonight's home contest against Notre Dame, the Cub varsity basketball squad remains in the hunt for second place in the ultra competitive Mission League. Loyola fell to archrival Harvard-Westlake, 70-66, in a dramatic overtime thriller at Leavey Gymnasium on Friday, January 27. The Cubs had possession of the ball with 21.2 seconds remaining in regulation with the score knotted, 59-59, but were unable to convert, thus forcing the overtime period.
Loyola (13-9, 4-5) fell to Serra of Gardena, 66-59, last Saturday in the State Preview Classic played at Cerritos College. On Monday, the Cubs gave league-leading Alemany (21-3, 9-0) a real fight before finally succumbing, 77-66. On Wednesday in La Canada before a raucous crowd, Loyola defeated St. Francis, 69-59.
After tonight's clash with the Knights, who took the Cubs to overtime before falling in the teams' first meeting in Sherman Oaks, Loyola will travel to West Hills on Monday to play Chaminade (16-9, 5-4) before completing the league campaign at home against Crespi on Wednesday. The Cubs would likely have to win out to tie for a second place league finish, and Harvard-Westlake would have to lose tonight and in its finale against Chaminade.
Loyola's JV squad defeated St. Francis, 69-46, on Wednesday, and the Cub freshmen remained undefeated in Mission League play with a 74-45 demolition of St. Francis.

Cub varsity soccer has secured no worse than second place finish in Mission League
Loyola's varsity soccer team defeated Alemany, 3-0, on Monday, and downed St. Francis, 3-0, on Wednesday after tying Harvard-Westlake last Friday, 1-1. The Cubs are currently 5-2-2 in league with three matches remaining. Notre Dame is 9-0 in loop competition. Harvard-Westlake is in third place with a 3-5-3 league slate.
Loyola JV soccer having season for record books
The Loyola JV soccer squad is 9-0 in the Mission League and 13-0-2 overall. The Cubs have not allowed a goal in Mission League play,outscoring their league foes 41-0. In the season's 15 matches to date Loyola has outscored the competition 64-5. Loyola shut out Harvard-Westlake last Friday, 3-0; Alemany on Monday, 7-0; and St. Francis on Wednesday, 5-0.
Three Cub soccer players sign national letters of intent
On Wednesday, three Loyola soccer standouts signed national letters of intent. ANTONIO CHAVEZ BORELLI penned with Boston College, LUCIANO GAZCON inked with Columbia University and DOMINIC VADIVIA committed to Creighton University.
