Cub basketball secures spot in CIF Div. 1A playoffs
On Wednesday night at Leavey Gymnasium, Loyola's varsity basketball team secured the Cubs no worse than a third place finish in the ultra competitive Mission League by virtue of a nip and tuck, fight-to-the-finish, 70-62, victory over Encino Crespi.  Loyola trailed the Celts, 16-15, at the end of the first period and 27-26 at halftime before forging to a one-point, 43-42,  lead at the conclusion of the third period..  With 2:28 left in the the contest, the Cubs still led by just two points, before pulling out the pivotal win during a two minute stretch that seemed like an eternity.  Loyola senior guard KHRISTION COURSEAULT once against led the Cubs with 22 points.  Courseault, who missed more than half the season with an injury, has scored 22, 23 and 22 points in his last three outings and also has been a big contributor on the boards and in dishing out assists.

Loyola, ranked fifth in Div. 1A, completed Mission League play with a 7-5 record and an overall regular season slate of 16-9.  The victory over Crespi assured the Cubs of a spot in the CIF Southern Section Division 1A playoffs that get underway next week.  The playoff seeds and pairings will be announced by the CIF Southern Section this Sunday.

Second place Harvard-Westlake was without the services of their best player on Wednesday, which contributed to the Wolverines' lopsided loss to league champion Alemany.  If Harvard-Westlake falls to Chaminade this evening. Loyola would end up in a three-way tie for second place in the Mission League.  The Cubs appear to be playing their basketball of the season heading into the playoffs.
