Loyola basketball takes on Walnut in first round of CIF 1A playoffs
Loyola's varsity basketball team, which finished third in the Mission League, will travel to Walnut High School on Wednesday to take on a Mustang squad that finished second in the Hacienda League. Walnut is 20-7 overall. The Cubs are seeded fifth in the CIF Southern Section Division 1A playoff bracket that was released by the CIF on Sunday.
League rival Harvard-Westlake (16-11) was awarded the top seed in the 1A bracket. Pasadena (21-5), whom Loyola defeated, 66-53, in the 14th annual Rose City Round Ball Classic on December 3, is seeded second. The number three seed is Hacienda League champion Los Altos (21-5), and the number four seed is Rio Hondo League title winner, La Canada (24-4), which is on a 14-game win streak. The Cubs could meet La Canada in the quarterfinals if they win on Wednesday and Friday.
If the Cubs can corral the Mustangs on Wednesday, they will play the winner of the contest between Huntington Beach (17-9), which finished third in the Sunset League, and the second place team from the Moore League, L.B. Millikan (17-9). If Millikan puts a cap on the Oilers, the second round game against the Rams would be hosted by Loyola on Friday. A coin toss would determine the site of a second round game against Huntington Beach if it downs Millikan.
Walnut High School is located at 400 Pierre Road, Walnut, CA 91789. Tip off Wednesday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Cub soccer hopes to make a run in CIF playoffs
After winning the CIF Southern Section Division I championship, earning the number one ranking in California and being named the second best prep team in the country in 2015-2016, Loyola failed to win the league soccer title for the first time in recent memory in concluding a tougher than expected 2016-2017 regular season.
On Monday the Cubs (12-9-5, second place Mission League) were pitted against Simi Valley (10-6-3), the top team in the Coastal Canyon League in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs when the CIF announced the playoff brackets. Loyola will be on the road for its first round match against the Pioneers. If the Cubs win on Friday, they will likely take on number three seed, Santa Barbara, the champion of the of the Channel League and a perennial soccer powerhouse. Loyola is hoping to put together a strong playoff run.
