LOYOLA ATHLETICS - Cubs playing for two CIF Southern Section tiles this weekend
DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION LOYOLA PLAYING FOR SCHOOL’S THIRTEENTH CIF SOUTHERN SECTION VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP ON SATURDAY
Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Cerritos College in Norwalk, Loyola will take on Mira Costa for the CIF Southern Section Division I volleyball championship.
The discipline and culture that head coach MICHAEL BOEHLE has established in Loyola's national powerhouse volleyball program is extraordinary.
In his 26th year at the helm, BOEHLE'S 2024 team (31-1-1), currently ranked number one in the nation by USA Today, will be vying for its seventh CIF Southern Section Division I title during his tenure.
The Cubs were crowned National Champions in 2009, 2017 and 2023 under BOEHLE.
Coach BOEHLE has lauded legendary Loyola head football coach Steve Grady '63 (1976-2004,269-77-6)in showing him how to build a championship PROGRAM of nationally renowned status and a disciplined, warrior culture.
The Cubs defeated Mira Costa in Manhattan Beach, 3-1, in their annual non-league battle on March 22, before a crowd close to 3,000 in Manhattan Beach, but Costa appears to be peaking at just the right time.
Loyola, the defending National Champion, had three tough playoff matches to make it to the finals, the most grueling of which was the 3-2 nail biter against Huntington Beach in the first round. And Newport Harbor gave the Cubs all they could handle in the semifinals on May 4 at Leavy Gymnasium. So get ready for what promises to be a blockbuster match for the ages.
Senior outside hitter Sean Kelly (6-7) is widely considered to be the best high school volleyball player in the nation.
Kelly had 35 kills in the semifinals against Newport Harbor. Headed to UCLA, the there is a good chance that Kelly will represent the USA in the Olympics, as did the "King of the Beach", Loyola grad Sinjun Smith.
If you want to see high school athletics at its most impressive level, you don't want to miss the title match on Saturday. Tickets are going fast.
Coach BOEHLE is encouraging the Loyola community to turn out en masse on Saturday evening. And to make its presence felt.
