Cub Football - Wins from a loss
LOYOLA MAY HAVE FOUND TRACTION IN ONE POINT LOSS
Last Friday’s one-point, 30-29, loss to Damien felt like a step up for Loyola rather than a step down. Yes, it was the first time in 44 years the Cubs lost a second consecutive game to open a season, but the positives displayed actually outnumbered the negatives.
No plays were more indicative of the brand of football the Cubs showed than junior safety PETER SCIARRINO’s devastating hit on Spartan receiver late in the game and junior defensive lineman ZION SCRIVENS exploding through Damien’s offensive line to tackle the Spartans’ quarterback for a safety with less than five minutes to play in the third quarter.
Loyola played physically for four quarters against a good opponent. As usual, junior running back SEAN MORRIS II set an impressively tough tone on the offensive side of the ball, while junior left tackle and team captain NATHAN TURK (6-3, 275) is leading a young offensive line that continues to be an improving work in progress.
Senior safety DESI VALDES and senior linebacker HENRY CASANI were others who spearheaded a hard hitting team effort.
The Cub passing game got untracked with junior QB ASHTON PANNELL passing for 246 yards, which showed significant promise for big contests down the road.
Both Loyola and its next opponent, Leuzinger of Lawndale, have byes this week.
LOYOLA NUMBERS OF NOTE
7 - The combined number of sacks recorded by junior defensive linemen MAX MEIER (3.0), ZION SCRIVENS (2.5), and SILAS NUR (1.5) in two games.
8 - The number of Loyola defenders who have double digit tackle totals through two contests: HENRY CASANI 27, ZION SCRIVENS 22, DESI VALDES 22, DAEQUAN JEFFES 19, SCOTT TAYLOR 15, PETER SCIARRINO 14, BROCK BOJORQUEZ 12, SILAS NUR 10.
426 - Total offensive yards gained against Damien, the most by the Cubs since the 476 yards amassed against St. Francis in 2022.
25th - SEAN MORRIS II’s place on the state leaders list of most yards gained by California high school running backs.
162.5 - Average rushing yards per game by SEAN MORRIS II.
13.5 - Tackles per game average by inside linebacker HENRY CASANI.
55 - The number of rushing yards (3.9 ypc) allowed by Loyola’s ‘Wolfpack defense’ against Damien.
4 - The combined win total of Loyola’s freshman (2-0) and sophomore (2-0) teams after two games.
LOOKING AHEAD
If the Damien performance is a true indication of the direction this Loyola squad is headed, the Cubs could begin to make some real noise.
