LOYOLA FRESHMEN PLASTER PARACLETE’S JVs, 45-0, IMPROVE TO 7-0
Loyola’s freshman team remained undefeated as it rolled over Paraclete’s JV squad, 45-0, at Smith Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Cubs improved their overall record to 7-0 in their romp over the visiting Spirits from Lancaster. Loyola punted only once, scored touchdowns on six of its eight possessions and kicked a 40-yard field goal on its final set of downs before the Big Blue intercepted a visitors’ pass to end the one-sided battle.
Meanwhile, the Cub ‘Wolfpack’ defense was dominant once again. Paraclete was forced to punt three times, failed to convert on two fourth down tries, fumbled twice and threw an interception.
The fourth quarter was played with a running clock after Loyola scored its sixth touchdown of the day with 32 seconds left in the third quarter.
Cub safety PETER SCIARRINO caused a Spirit fumble on the second play of the game, setting Loyola up at the Spirits’ 23 yard line.
A 20-yard pass completion from QB JACK THOMAS to wide receiver JOSH GALLAGHER moved the ball to the Paraclete three yard line, and SONNY VILLEGAS bolted into the end zone from three yards out on the next play. KIAN FAHID, who made all six of his PAT kicks, gave the Cubs a 7-0 lead at the 10:21 mark of the first quarter, and those points were all Loyola would need to win their second Angelus League contest.
The Cubs drove 82 yards on five plays, scoring on a 41- yard pass from THOMAS to wide receiver JACKSON NELSON with 8:38 left in the first quarter. Tailback CASH GINSBERG had an outstanding 28-yard run on the drive, which gave Loyola a 14-0 advantage.
It only took one play following a Spirits’ punt to score again. THOMAS again completed a perfectly thrown deep ball to JACKSON, which covered 49 yards at the 4:30 mark of the second quarter, and the Cub lead ballooned to 21-0.
With 34 seconds left on the first half clock THOMAS completed a six-yard touchdown pass to GALLAGHER to give the Cubs a commanding 28-0 lead heading into intermission.
Quarterback MASYN HARVEY capped a 10-play 86 yard drive with a five yard sprint to the end zone with 4:53 left in the third quarter to extend Loyola’s lead to 35-0.
Following Paraclete’s failure to convert a fourth down play, the Cubs drove 29 yards in five plays, scoring on a six-yard VILLEGAS run with 32 seconds left in the third quarter.
With 3:45 left in the game FAHID split the uprights on a 40-yard field goal attempt to make the final score 45-0.
The offensive line (tackle PATRICK PELLIGRINI, guard MATTHEW ALMENDAREZ, center NELSON PYE, guard DAMIEN UTUONE and tackle NATHAN TURK and defensive line (MAX MEIER, TURK, PELLEGRINI, and UTUONE) were outstanding all afternoon.
Other standouts on defense were inside linebackers RONEN ZAMORANO and LUCA MARUCCI; outside linebacker WES McMULLIN, inside linebacker HOLDEN SMYSER; and defensive backs CADIN FETTERS, GALLAGHER and SCIARRINO.
Running backs GINSBERG and VILLEGAS ran hard throughout the contest.
Both QBs, THOMAS and HARVEY, had great games.
Loyola has outscored its seven opponents 272-50. The Cubs will travel to Cathedral next Wednesday to take on a tough Phantom JV squad that will have more than a few players from the varsity roster primed to take on the Big Blue.
