Cub Football -Vanguard meeting a rousing success

Loyola Gridiron Vanguard meeting brought generations of Cubs together
The Loyola Gridiron Vanguard's Second Annual Cocktail Reception and Dinner Meeting on Tuesday night was a rousing success.  The event brought multiple generations of Loyola football alumni together in support of Cub Football.

Interim head coach RICK PEDROARIAS '84 provided details about his vision for the program, which includes a physical, disciplined brand of football.  Former head coach STEVE GRADY '63, the only man in California prep football history to be named both State Player of the Year (1962) and State Coach of the Year (2003) spoke about Pedroarias' passion, commitment and intelligence.

Principal Frank Kozakowski spoke of his cherished days as a Loyola assistant football coach from the late '70s into the 1990s and the important place the program holds in the heart and soul of the school.

Guest speaker DON SWARTZ '63, the 1963 CIF Southern Section AAAA Player-of-the-Year, told some great stories about Loyola's single wing dominance during its CIF AAAA record 35-game winning streak.

Former All-CIF Southern Section AAAA lineman GEORGE KUNZ '64 (a consensus University of Notre Dame All-American, the second player taken in the 1969 NFL draft and eight time All-Pro lineman for the Baltimore Colts and Atlanta Falcons) flew in from Nevada for the night.  Eighty-four year old BILL LENIHAN '54, Swartz and Kunz's line coach on the back-to-back CIF AAAA title teams of '62 and '63, was in attendance, and looked like he could still coach with his legendary authority.

Spanning generations of Cub Football from All CIF AAAA tailback ROB SMITH '59; to All-Catholic League linebacker GREG PEREZ '63; to CHAD PEPPARS '06, the All-Serra League running back on the Cubs' 2005 CIF Southern Section Division I championship team; to BOB WOOLWAY '77, a two-time All-CIF AAAA linebacker; to PAT NOMURA '76, an All-CIF running back on the 1975 National Championship team; to All-Del Rey League tailback TAYLOR WILLIAMS '00; to Admiral MIKE SHATYNSKI '75, an All-Del Rey League center on the '74 squad; to All-Del Rey League running back DERRICK JACOB '85 - to name just of few of the former Cub stalwarts in attendance - there was plenty of passion for Cub Football on display during the course of a great evening.

The Loyola Gridiron Vanguard is very pleased the event was so well attended, and kudos are in order to Event Vice President DREW CASANI '91, the 1990 CIF Southern Section DIvision I Defensive Player of the Year, for coordinating yet another tremendous celebration of Cub Football.
