Cub Football - Update on Cubs in Super Bowls
LOYOLA ALL-AMERICAN MATT WARE WAS FIRST CUB TO PLAY IN SUPER BOWLS
The Cubs lost an overtime heartbreaker to L. B. Poly in the 2000 CIF Southern Section Division I championship game played before a huge crowd at Anaheim Stadium in 2000, but Loyola still finished the campaign ranked as the 15th best prep squad in the nation. The leader of one of the greatest Cub teams of all time was CIF Division I Player-of-the-Year MATT WARE ‘01.
An elite athlete, Ware started at quarterback for Loyola and also played safety in high leverage situations. A first team high school All-American, Ware earned freshman All-American honors as a safety at UCLA and was later drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, who played in the Super Bowl in 2005, Ware’s rookie year. In 2009 Ware played corner for the Arizona Cardinals in and Super Bowl XLIII.
With DAVID LONG, Jr. ‘16 and COLEMAN SHELTON ‘13 playing for the Rams in Super Bowl LVI this Sunday, there will be three former Cub football players who were on Super Bowl teams.
