Cub Football - Two more Cubs join the ranks of National Football Foundation Scholar Athletes
Loyola adds pair to ranks of National Football Foundation Scholar Athletes
No school in Southern California comes remotely close to Loyola in placing senior football players in the hallowed National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete fraternity.
On March 24 the latest CUbs to be honored by the Foundation were All-Mission League linebacker WINSTON ANAWALT and All-Mission League quarterback SEAN O'MALLEY. Anawalt will continue his academic pursuits and football career at UCLA, and O'Malley will attend and play football at Lafayette. Anawalt led the Cubs in tackles for a second consecutive season last fall, while O'Malley is Loyola's all-time leader in total passing yards. The induction of the two scholar athletes increased the number of Loyola NFFCHF honorees to 101.
It is ironic that DON SWARTZ '64, the guest speaker at the well-attended Loyola Gridiron Vanguard Second Annual Cocktail Reception and Dinner Meeting on Tuesday night was Loyola's first recipient of the Foundation's Scholar Athlete award and that GEORGE KUNZ '65, who flew in from out of state for the festivities, was the second Cub recipient of the prestigious honor. Swartz, a two way lineman on Loyola's 1963 CIF title team, was named the 1963 CIF Southern Section AAAA Player of the Year. Kunz was an ALL-CIF Cub lineman in 1964. He also started on the '63 championship team as a junior and was later a consensus All-American at the University of Notre Dame and an eight time All-Pro lineman in the National Football League.
Loyola's long list of NFFCHF Scholar Athletes is a testament to the fact that no high school in California combines academic excellence with football prowess better than Loyola.
