Cub Football - Two former Loyola players make Times' first team NFL selections from Southland high schools
Two former Cub stars make list of top former Southland players in NFL
On Monday, the Los Angeles Times named an all-star team of NFL players who had played high school football in the Southland, and Loyola was one of three schools to have more than one player named to the all-star list. The two former Cubs selected were CHRIS CONTE '07 and ANTHONY BARR '10.
CHRIS CONTE '07
Conte was an All-CIF Southern Section Division I honoree as a senior defensive back at Loyola in 2006. He helped lead Loyola to its sixth CIF Large Schools championship as a junior in 2005. A Super Prep All-Far West selection, Conte accepted a scholarship to Cal where he earned All-Pac-12 accolades as a senior.
Conte was selected in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears. He started for the Bears as a rookie and made the 2011 All-Rookie squad selected by both Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writers of America. Conte signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015 and currently is a 6-2, 203 lb. starting safety for the Bucs.
ANTHONY BARR '10
As a junior running back at Loyola in 2008 Barr was named the Most Valuable Player of the Serra League after rushing for 1,890 yards. He garnered All-State recognition and was selected to play in the prestigious Army All-American game heading into his senior year. In the spring of his junior year at Loyola, Barr ran a 21.86 200 meter time for the Cub track team. Unfortunately his senior campaign was cut short by a fractured ankle suffered early in the season.
Barr accepted a scholarship to UCLA where after his sophomore year he was converted to linebacker. He earned first team All-Pac-12 honors in 2012 and 2013 while excelling as a linebacker for the Bruins. Barr was a consensus All-American in his senior year and won the Lott IMPACT Trophy as college football's top defensive player.
In the 2014 NFL Draft Barr was the sixth player taken in the first round. As a rookie with the Minnesota Vikings, Barr was named to the All-NFC North Team. The 6-5, 256 lb. outside linebacker was electronically timed at 4.41 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Barr was selected to play in the NFL Pro Bowl in both 2015 and 2016.
Loyola and college football recruiting
There is a popular misconception that Loyola, as the top academic all-boys high school in California, does not have many players recruited. Nothing could be further from the truth. Thirty-three former players are competing at the collegiate level (believed to be second in the state in terms of graduates playing college football) and four are starting for Pac-12 teams, and one is a starting corner at Michigan The program has an assistant coach who is in charge of college recruiting. He is busy interfacing with college recruiting coordinators to place Cub players in the collegiate football ranks. Not every Loyola player who has aspirations of playing at the next level is a Football Bowl Subdivision caliber athlete, but Cub players have had success in being recruited by Football Championship Subdivision schools and Division III programs.
Loyola currently has seventeen players on the squads of Football Bowl Subdivision programs.
It is expected that COLEMAN SHELTON' 13, a senior team captain and All-Pac-12 center at Washington, will be joining Conte and Barr in the NFL ranks. Shelton is regarded by many draft gurus as the second best NFL center prospect in the upcoming 2018 NFL draft.
TAILGATE IN SAN DIEGO FRIDAY
