Cub Football - Two Cubs in Super Bowl - Loyola O-lineman Sam Yoon first team All-State
TWO LOYOLA GRADS ON SUPER BOWL RAMS TEAM
CalHi Sports first team All-State and All-American corner DAVID LONG, JR. ‘16 helped lead Loyola to a 17th place finish in the final CalHi Sports state rankings in 2015 along with his good friend and fellow Pasadena resident, team MVP MYLES BRYANT ‘16 (All-State honorable mention), now with the Patriots.
LONG was an All-Big 10 corner at Michigan before being drafted by the Los Angeles Rams. This season, LONG, a slot corner, has made the sixth most solo tackles for Los Angeles and had an interception for a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals.
Rams center COLEMAN SHELTON ‘13 started two regular season games and every preseason contest for the Rams this season. An All-Serra League tackle at Loyola, SHELTON played every offensive line position at the University of Washington, where he was a team captain and All-PAC-12 performer.
Following his graduation from WashiShelton was initially with the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals before signing with the Rams in 2019.
This marks the first time Loyola players have competed in the National Football League’s Super Bowl. Indeed, it may be the first time two players from the same high school have ever been a part of the same Super Bowl squad.
Loyola currently has four players in the NFL, multi-time All-Pro linebacker ANTHONY BARR ‘10 (the Vikings’ nominee for NFL Man of the Year), now a free agent; BRYANT (starting New England nickel); LONG and SHELTON.
Super Bowl LVI will be played at SoFi Stadium this Sunday.
SAM YOON NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-STATE
Three-year starting Loyola offensive lineman SAM YOON added to his impressive post-season honors list, which includes All-CIF Southern Section Division 3, All-Los Angeles Times, All-State Medium Schools first team, All-Angelus League first team and Loyola line MVP, when he was named a first team All-State offensive lineman this week by CalHi Sports.
Yoon, who served as a team captain, accepted a scholarship to UCLA, scored a 1550 out of a possible 1600 on the SAT and maintains a 4.8 grade point average and serves as Loyola’s Student Body President. The senior left tackle was a pivotal performer for the Cubs’ high scoring offense in 2021, which saw Loyola capture a second consecutive Angelus League championship. Yoon established himself as one of the best linemen in Cub Football annals.
